Over six days you’ll trek through Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains, following a route that combines valleys, high passes, alpine lakes, and the summit of Mount Toubkal. Along the way you’ll stay in a mix of traditional gîtes, village guesthouses, tents, and a mountain refuge, offering an authentic experience of mountain life. The itinerary is designed to steadily build up to the final summit day.
Day 1 – Imlil to Tacheddirt
The trek begins in Imlil (1,740m), with a steady two-hour climb to Tizi n’Tamatert Pass (2,279m). From here, descend into the Imnane Valley before continuing towards Tacheddirt (around 2,400m). Expect 4–6 hours on foot with a mix of gradual ascents and descents. Overnight in a gîte or camp in the village.
Day 2 – Tacheddirt to Azib Likemt
Leaving the village behind, you climb steadily towards Tizi n’Likemt Pass (3,555m). The path is challenging but rewards you with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. After crossing the pass, descend to the shepherd’s pastures at Azib Likemt (2,600m) where camp is set for the night.
Day 3 – Azib Likemt to Amsouzert
Today takes you through remote valleys dotted with Berber hamlets. The landscape gradually softens as you approach Amsouzert (1,740m), a charming village where you’ll stay in a local guesthouse. This day offers an authentic glimpse into High Atlas village life.
Day 4 – Amsouzert to Ifni Lake
The route climbs steadily towards Ifni Lake (2,295m), the only large lake in the High Atlas. Set in a steep, rocky basin, its turquoise waters make a dramatic contrast with the surrounding peaks. Overnight camping on the lakeshore.
Day 5 – Ifni Lake to Toubkal Refuge
A steep climb takes you up to Tizi n’Ouanoums Pass (3,660m), a dramatic notch in the ridge. After reaching the top, descend carefully into the valley below, finishing at the Toubkal Refuge (3,200m), your base for the summit attempt.
Day 6 – Toubkal Summit and Return to Marrakech
An early start sees you ascending Mount Toubkal (4,167m). The climb is tough but achievable, and from the summit you’ll have 360-degree views stretching across the Atlas Mountains and out towards the Sahara. Descend back to Imlil, where private transport returns you to Marrakech.
The trek begins and ends in Imlil, a mountain village about 90 minutes from Marrakech that serves as the main starting point for High Atlas treks. Nestled in a valley surrounded by walnut groves and terraced fields, it is a lively hub for walkers preparing to head into the mountains. From here the route climbs into the Imnane Valley before venturing into more remote terrain rarely visited by casual travellers.
Across the six days, you’ll cross several dramatic high passes, visit traditional Berber villages, and reach Ifni Lake, the only large natural lake in the High Atlas. The culmination is the ascent of Mount Toubkal, which offers expansive views across the peaks and even as far as the Sahara Desert on clear days. The variety of landscapes makes this one of the most rewarding treks in North Africa.
Accommodation is chosen to reflect both the landscape and local culture. The first nights are spent in village gîtes and family-run guesthouses where you can enjoy home-cooked meals and experience everyday Berber hospitality. Camps are set up in more remote areas such as Azib Likemt and the shores of Ifni Lake, allowing you to sleep under the stars in peaceful mountain surroundings.
Later in the trek, you’ll stay at the Toubkal Refuge, a functional but welcoming mountain base camp for summit attempts. While facilities are simple, the refuge provides warmth, hot meals, and a place to rest before climbing North Africa’s highest peak. A sleeping bag is recommended for camping nights, while bedding is provided in the guesthouses and refuge.
This trek is suitable for those with a reasonable level of fitness who are comfortable walking for 5–8 hours a day on mountain paths. The route includes steep ascents, descents, and sustained days at altitude, often above 3,000m. While previous trekking experience is helpful, it is not essential if you are prepared for the physical challenge and have a positive approach to mountain conditions.
Altitude is a key consideration, and although the itinerary is designed to allow gradual acclimatisation, participants should be aware of the effects it can have. Weather in the High Atlas can also change quickly, so suitable clothing and footwear are required. A sense of adventure and flexibility will go a long way in making the experience rewarding.
The trek is led by qualified local mountain guides who know the trails intimately and are skilled at supporting groups in both comfort and safety. Their knowledge of the routes, mountain conditions, and Berber culture ensures that you gain much more than just a walking holiday. With all meals, accommodation, and transfers organised, you can focus on enjoying the trekking experience without logistical concerns.
In addition to their guiding expertise, the team offers cultural insight and a welcoming atmosphere, making each stage of the trek memorable. From sharing stories in village homes to helping you pace yourself on steep ascents, the support provided is both practical and personal. Choosing this trek means experiencing the High Atlas in the company of those who know it best.
The meeting point is in Marrakech, with pick-up and drop off available from your hotel.
Our service includes:
The trek is considered moderately challenging, with daily walks lasting between 5 and 8 hours over mountain terrain. You will cross several high passes, walk at altitude, and experience steep ascents and descents. The climb to the summit of Mount Toubkal is tough but manageable for most people with a good fitness level.
Previous trekking experience is helpful, but not essential. If you enjoy walking and are comfortable spending multiple days outdoors, you’ll adapt well to the pace of the trek. The guides provide support and set a manageable pace to ensure everyone has the best chance of reaching the summit.
Accommodation varies across the trek. In villages, you will stay in gîtes or small guesthouses, offering simple but welcoming rooms with basic amenities. At the more remote sections, such as Azib Likemt and Ifni Lake, you will sleep in tents with the support team setting up camp and preparing meals.
On the fifth night, the group stays at the Toubkal Refuge. This is a communal mountain lodge with dormitory-style rooms, hot meals, and a lively atmosphere as many trekkers gather here before their summit attempt. Bedding is provided in the refuge, but you will need a sleeping bag for camping nights.
Meals are freshly prepared by the cook or support team using local ingredients. Expect Moroccan dishes such as tagines, couscous, grilled meats, lentils, pasta, and plenty of vegetables. Breakfast usually includes bread, jam, cheese, eggs, and tea or coffee, while lunches are often picnic-style with salads, bread, fruit, and cold dishes.
All meals are included from lunch on the first day to lunch on the last day. The food is hearty, nutritious, and designed to give you the energy needed for trekking. Vegetarian and other dietary needs can usually be catered for, but it’s important to mention these when booking.
You’ll need good-quality trekking boots, waterproof clothing, warm layers, a headtorch, water bottle, and a sleeping bag for the camping nights. A rucksack is necessary for carrying personal items, while larger bags are carried by pack animals. Trekking poles can also be useful for the steep ascents and descents.
The support team provides tents, cooking equipment, and pack animals to transport the main gear. This means you only need to carry what you’ll need during the day, such as water, snacks, and extra layers. A full kit list is usually supplied ahead of the trek.
Private transport is included from Marrakech to Imlil at the start of the trek. The drive takes around 90 minutes and allows you to see the landscape change from the busy city into rural valleys and mountain villages. On the final day, transport is provided back to Marrakech.
This makes the logistics simple, as you only need to arrange your flights into Marrakech. From there, everything is taken care of, meaning you can focus on the trekking experience without worrying about onward travel.
Altitude can affect anyone, regardless of fitness, once above 3,000m. The itinerary is designed to gradually gain height over several days, which reduces the risk of altitude sickness. Most participants experience only mild symptoms such as shortness of breath or a headache.
Guides are trained to recognise the signs of altitude sickness and will support you throughout the trek. Drinking plenty of water, pacing yourself, and resting when needed are the best ways to adapt. In rare cases, descent may be necessary if symptoms persist.
The trek is led by experienced local guides who know the terrain and culture of the High Atlas. They manage the pace, ensure safety on the trails, and provide insight into the local way of life. A cook and muleteers accompany the group to handle meals and transport equipment.
This support allows you to concentrate on enjoying the trek without the burden of carrying heavy loads or worrying about logistics. The team also creates a welcoming environment, making it easy to connect with fellow trekkers and local communities.

The highlight of our trip to Morocco was the two days we spent in the Atlas Mountains, organised by Mohamed Adventuro, we left Marrakech unaware of just how beautiful and friendly this part of the world would be. Two days hiking around the mountains in the shadow of Mount Toubkal,…
The actual trip was fantastic overall- Rachid picked me up as planned and we went up to Imlil. However, the route was not as described in the Adventuro listing and was hard work (745 metres ascent total in 12.5km, the last 5km being about 500m ascent all uphill) not a…
