Eight days from Marrakech thread mule tracks toward Toubkal, with a refuge night before the 4,167 m morning. You walk through Tamsoulte, Tizi Mzik and Berber settlements while a mule team carries camp, then climb from 3,200 m to the highest ground in North Africa. Airport transfers and a city hotel night bookend the week.
Your first night is a hotel in Marrakech after the airport transfer. Pickup then takes you to Imi-n-Oughlad, where the mule team loads the bags and you follow shepherds' paths between settlements and waterfalls. Walking days climb from around 1,500 m in the Tiziane Valley toward the Toubkal Refuge at 3,200 m, with nights in camp, gite or the hut as listed.
Summit morning starts before dawn and climbs about 1,000 m on rock and scree to 4,167 m, then you return to the refuge the same day. After that you walk down to Imlil, drive back to Marrakech, and take an airport transfer on the last morning. Height gain, loose stone and early starts make the days feel longer than a valley walk.
Toubkal sits in the High Atlas south of Marrakech, a block of rock and scree that holds the highest ground in North Africa. Approaches come through terraced fields, walnut groves and high pastures, then into a stone basin around the refuge where the last 1,000 m of height is mostly rock.
Imlil and Aremd are the usual gateways, with mule tracks linking Tizi Mzik, Sidi Chamharouch and the refuge. Marrakech is a few hours' drive north, so you start and finish in the city rather than camping on night one.
You should already be used to full days on steep trails with a daypack, over several days in a row. Summit morning is cold, rocky and slow, so previous trekking at height helps even if you have not been to 4,000 m before.
The minimum age is 15, and anyone under 18 travels with an adult. Tell us honestly about recent hiking before you travel. Broken-in boots, a 3-season sleeping bag and layers for a pre-dawn start are essential.
Local mountain guides lead the route, and a mule team carries tents, mats and the kitchen so you are not hauling camp kit on the climbs. Hotel or riad collection in Marrakech is part of the trip, which saves an early taxi hunt on the morning you leave for Imi-n-Oughlad.
Meals on the trail are cooked for the group, and overnight stops mix camp, gite and the Toubkal Refuge so the height gain is spread before summit day. Groups stay between 2 and 15 people, which keeps the pace workable on narrow paths.
We meet you at Marrakech airport and transfer you to a shared 3 or 4 star hotel for bed and breakfast. Use the afternoon to rest, check your kit, and settle in the city before the drive into the mountains tomorrow.
Pickup from your Marrakech hotel or riad takes you to Imi-n-Oughlad at 1,600 m, where the muleteer team loads the luggage. You climb to Tizi n'Tacht at 2,000 m, then descend into the Tiziane Valley at 1,500 m for a night in camp or a gite.
From Tiziane the path threads terraced fields and Berber villages as you gain height toward Azib Tamsoulte at 2,200 m. A stop at the Tamsoulte waterfalls breaks the climb, then you continue to camp or a mountain refuge for the night.
You leave Tamsoulte and climb to the Tizi Mzik pass, with a wide view over the neighbouring valleys and peaks. A gentler descent leads into Aremd at 1,900 m, a Berber village of packed-earth houses, for a night in camp or a guesthouse.
From Aremd you climb through the valley toward Sidi Chamharouch, a shrine village on the Toubkal path, and pause there before the final pull. The afternoon finishes at the Toubkal Refuge at 3,200 m, where you sleep and prepare for a pre-dawn start.
An early start from the refuge takes you up rock and scree to the summit of Toubkal at 4,167 m, the highest point in North Africa. After time on the top you descend the same route and spend a second night at the refuge to recover.
You leave the high ground and walk down through villages and terraced fields toward Imlil. A vehicle meets you there for the drive back to Marrakech and a night in the city after the trek.
After breakfast we transfer you to Marrakech airport. Keep this morning free of other plans so the drive fits your check-in time. Extra nights in the city before or after the trek are your own arrangement unless we have already agreed them.
We collect you from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. You do not need a separate taxi to a trailhead. Tell us the property name and a pin or street that a vehicle can reach, especially if you are staying in a medina lane.
International flights into Marrakech Menara are your own arrangement. Day 1 includes an airport transfer to the hotel if you arrive that day. If you are already in the city, we still collect you from your stay for the drive to Imi-n-Oughlad on the first walking day.
Your first night is in a shared 3 or 4 star hotel in Marrakech, with breakfast included. After the walk out to Imlil you return to the city for a final night before the airport transfer on day 8.
Rooms are shared as listed for this trip. Say if you are travelling as a pair or need a different room plan when you book, as mountain nights later in the week are camp, gite or refuge rather than a hotel.
On the trail you sleep in tents or simple gites and village guesthouses, depending on the night. We carry tents, mats, kitchen kit, tables and chairs, and a mule team moves the communal load so you walk with a daypack.
The night before the summit, and the night after it, are at the Toubkal Refuge at 3,200 m. It is a mountain hut with bunk-style rooms, often busy and cold, so bring your own sleeping bag for camp and refuge nights.
You should already be happy walking six to eight hours on steep, uneven paths with a daypack, over several days in a row. Summit morning starts before dawn and climbs about 1,000 m on rock and scree from the refuge at 3,200 m to 4,167 m, then you descend the same way.
Previous trekking at height helps, even if you have not been to 4,000 m before. This is an improver itinerary rather than a first hill walk. Tell us honestly about recent hiking before you travel so we can pace the group.
Yes. The route is built around a night at the Toubkal Refuge at 3,200 m and an early climb to 4,167 m, North Africa's highest peak. You return to the refuge the same day, then walk out toward Imlil on the following morning.
Approach days and the Tamsoulte waterfalls come first so you gain height gradually. Weather and the group's condition on the morning can still affect whether everyone continues all the way to the cairn, and the guide will make that call on the slope.
The minimum age on this trek is 15. Anyone under 18 travels with a responsible adult. Days are long and the summit morning is cold, rocky and slow, so younger walkers need real hill experience rather than a single day hike.
If you are travelling as a family group, send ages when you confirm so we can check the mix. Other Marrakech days may suit younger children better than this eight-day itinerary.
Yes. Collection from your hotel or riad in Marrakech is included for the transfer to Imi-n-Oughlad, where you meet the mule team. You do not need to make your own way to the trailhead.
Airport transfers at the start and on the last morning are also part of the itinerary. If you are staying well outside Marrakech, send the address so we can confirm whether the same pickup still applies.
We provide tents, sleeping mats, kitchen and dining kit, tables and chairs, and a mule team to move that load between camps. On some nights you sleep in a gite, a village guesthouse or the Toubkal Refuge instead of a tent.
Bring your own sleeping bag. Personal hiking clothing, boots and a daypack stay with you. The mules carry communal camp kit and the bulk of the luggage, not every extra you pack.
Pack layers for hot valley afternoons and a cold pre-dawn on the ridge: base layers, fleece, a warm jacket, waterproof shell, hat and gloves. Boots should be broken in, with socks you already trust on long days.
A 20 to 30 litre daypack, at least two litres of water capacity, a headtorch, sunscreen, sunglasses and a small blister kit cover the walking hours. Keep the sleeping bag accessible for the refuge night, which can feel colder than camp lower down.
Departures run with a minimum of 2 people and a maximum of 15. That range keeps the mule train and the refuge stay manageable while still feeling like a small group on the path.
If you are a pair, you are already at the minimum. Larger private groups can be discussed, but the trip is staffed for the 2 to 15 range.
High wind, ice or very low visibility can make the last 1,000 m unsafe. The guide decides on the morning, not the night before, because conditions on the ridge change quickly. If the summit is called off, you still have the approach days and the walk out.
Lower walking days usually still run in ordinary mountain weather, with waterproofs and an earlier stop if storms build. Travel insurance that covers trekking to 4,167 m is strongly recommended.
Yes. A trek cook prepares meals on walking days, using the kitchen kit the mules carry. The first night in Marrakech is bed and breakfast at the hotel. Tell us about allergies or a vegetarian diet so shopping can be planned.
Snacks, bottled drinks and extra tea in village shops are your own cost. Carry a little cash in dirhams for those stops, because card machines are rare once you leave the city.
Day 1 is a transfer from Marrakech airport to your hotel, with a shared 3 or 4 star room and breakfast. Day 8 is a transfer back to the airport after the trek, so keep that morning free of other plans.
Send your flight numbers and hotel name after you confirm. If you arrive a day early or leave later, say so and we can confirm whether extra city nights are on you or can be added.
