This 15-day trek takes you into the Everest region via Lukla, following the Dudh Koshi valley to Namche Bazaar before turning towards the Gokyo lakes. It’s built for trekkers who want high-altitude trekking with big mountain viewpoints and a quieter alternative to the main Everest Base Camp route.
The key objective is the climb of Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) for wide views of Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and surrounding peaks, alongside time at the glacial lakes and the Ngozumpa glacier area. The itinerary includes acclimatisation in Namche and steady progression through higher, colder terrain.
After cultural time in Kathmandu, you fly to Lukla and trek up the Dudh Koshi valley to Namche Bazaar, the main Sherpa trading hub in the region. A dedicated acclimatisation day includes an optional hike towards viewpoints and nearby Sherpa villages, helping you adapt before moving into higher terrain.
From Namche, the trail branches away from the Everest Base Camp corridor towards Dole and Machhermo, climbing into a colder alpine environment with wide views and fewer settlements. You reach the Gokyo lake system and spend time exploring the lakes and surrounding ridges before a pre-dawn ascent of Gokyo Ri for a major Himalayan panorama. The return route follows the same valley back to Lukla, finishing with a final Kathmandu day that includes Durbar Square and local market areas.
This trek is in the Everest region within Sagarmatha National Park, beginning and ending with flights to and from Lukla. The route follows the Dudh Koshi valley through classic Sherpa settlements before branching into the Gokyo valley.
The Gokyo lake system sits high in a glacial landscape with the Ngozumpa glacier nearby. The combination of lakes, high viewpoints, and surrounding 8,000 m peaks makes this route one of the standout alternatives to the Everest Base Camp trail.
This is a high-altitude trek with multiple days above 4,000 m and a summit-style day hike to 5,357 m. You should have strong fitness, be comfortable walking 6–8 hours per day over consecutive days, and ideally have prior multi-day trekking experience.
Altitude management is central to this itinerary. You must be prepared for cold temperatures, basic teahouse accommodation, and the possibility of itinerary adjustments due to weather or health. Travel insurance that includes emergency helicopter evacuation is required.
This itinerary prioritises acclimatisation and steady progression, with a structured approach through Namche before moving into higher alpine terrain. The Gokyo route gives you major Himalayan viewpoints and time beside glacial lakes, while typically feeling less congested than the main Everest Base Camp corridor.
Experienced local guides, clear logistics, and included flights and permits keep the trip well organised. With a private format, pacing can be managed around your group while keeping safety and altitude response central throughout.

This itinerary reaches similar altitudes to many Everest region treks and includes a summit-style hike to 5,357 m, making it physically demanding. While some days may be less crowded than the Everest Base Camp corridor, the altitude and long trekking days still require strong fitness.
If you’ve done multi-day trekking before and cope well at altitude, this is a good step up. If you are new to trekking above 4,000 m, expect a tougher experience and take preparation seriously.
The highest point is Gokyo Ri at 5,357 m, climbed as a day hike from Gokyo village. Overnight altitudes include Namche (3,440 m), Dole (3,680 m), Machhermo (4,470 m), and Gokyo (4,470 m), meaning several nights are spent above 4,000 m.
The itinerary includes an acclimatisation day in Namche and gradual altitude gain thereafter. Guides will monitor symptoms and may adjust pacing or itinerary if required.
Teahouses provide simple rooms, usually twin-share, with communal dining areas. Facilities become more basic at higher elevations, and hot showers or charging may be available for a fee depending on the lodge.
Heating is usually limited to the dining area. Nights at Machhermo and Gokyo can be cold, so warm layers and a good sleeping system matter.
The climb is typically done pre-dawn to catch early light and clearer conditions. The route is a steep uphill on rocky terrain and can take around three hours to ascend, with a similar descent back to the village.
Because it’s above 5,000 m, you’ll move slowly with frequent breaks. Footing is generally straightforward but can feel physically taxing due to altitude.
Yes. Gokyo Ri is specifically known for views that include Everest alongside Makalu and Cho Oyu. Weather and visibility will affect what you see on the day.
The trek also offers regular mountain views from higher sections of the route, particularly after leaving Namche.
The trail from Lukla to Namche is commonly shared with Everest Base Camp trekkers. After the route branches towards Gokyo, it often feels quieter than the main EBC corridor, although that varies by season.
The lakes area can still be busy at peak times, particularly around sunrise hikes.
The itinerary includes TIMS and the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit. These are arranged for you as part of the trip.
You don’t need to organise permits independently, but you will need your passport details.
Flights to Lukla are weather dependent and can be delayed or cancelled. This can affect the itinerary, including trekking start or finish dates.
Your guide will manage on-the-ground decisions and logistics if delays occur, but you should build some flexibility into onward travel plans.
Due to sustained high altitude and the Gokyo Ri day, this is not ideal for beginners unless they are very fit and have prepared well. Prior experience with multi-day hiking is strongly recommended.
If you want a first Himalayan trek, consider routes with lower maximum altitude before stepping up to this itinerary.
Travel insurance must cover high-altitude trekking and include emergency helicopter evacuation. This is mandatory for remote Everest region routes.
Check your policy altitude limits carefully, ensuring it covers the highest point of 5,357 m.
