A short flight from Kathmandu to Lukla starts the trek, which climbs steadily through Namche Bazaar, Phortse Thanga and Machhermo to Gokyo, with a rest day built in at Namche to acclimatise. From Gokyo, the trail climbs Gokyo Ri before retracing a similar route back down to Lukla for the flight home.
Nights on the trail are spent in Sherpa-run guesthouses with twin rooms, hot meals and a stove-heated common room, with facilities becoming more basic the higher the trail climbs above Namche. Kathmandu nights either side of the trek are spent in a three-star or better hotel, giving a comfortable start and finish to the trip.
The Gokyo valley rewards walkers with glacial lakes and one of the finest mountain panoramas in the Khumbu from Gokyo Ri. The itinerary here is built with a proper acclimatisation day and conservative daily height gain to manage the altitude safely.
Guides are experienced with the Lukla flight schedule and its occasional delays, and every element from the flights to guesthouse bookings is confirmed ahead of departure as part of the inclusive package.
The Gokyo valley sits west of the main Everest Base Camp trail, reached via Namche Bazaar and a quieter route that runs alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal's largest, to a string of turquoise lakes fed by glacial meltwater. Gokyo Ri, the viewpoint above the lakes, is regarded by many trekkers as offering the finest panorama of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu anywhere in the region.
Namche Bazaar, the main hub of the Khumbu region, holds the area's government offices, shops, cafes and a busy Saturday market, and is a good base for the acclimatisation day built into this itinerary. Kathmandu, reached by an airport pickup on arrival, is the gateway city either side of the trek before the flight onward to Lukla.

Every guesthouse has a stove-heated common room in the evenings, a welcome place to warm up and dry out wet kit after a day on the trail. A four season sleeping bag rated for sub-zero temperatures is essential for the cold nights on the approach to Gokyo Ri.
