The route runs from Kathmandu through Jagat, Dharapani, Chame, Pisang and Manang, with a rest day built in at Manang to acclimatise before the push over Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi to the pass itself. The descent side runs through Muktinath and Jomsom before a short flight to Pokhara and the drive back to Kathmandu.
Nights are spent in local guesthouses throughout, with simple twin rooms and shared bathrooms that become more basic the higher the trail climbs, particularly above Manang. Kathmandu nights before and after the trek are spent in a comfortable three or four star hotel with private bathrooms and hot water on demand.
Crossing a pass above 5,000 metres safely depends on careful pacing, and the itinerary here builds in a dedicated acclimatisation day at Manang along with realistically short stages either side of the pass itself. Guides are experienced at reading how a group is coping with altitude and will adjust the schedule rather than push on regardless.
Permits, guesthouse bookings and internal flights are confirmed well ahead of departure, and a first aid kit and satellite communication travel with every group for the more remote sections above Manang.
The Annapurna Circuit loops around the Annapurna massif through some of the most varied terrain in Nepal, starting with an airport pickup in Kathmandu and a drive toward Besisahar before the trail climbs through warm, terraced farmland and pine and fir forest into the high, dry Manang valley, which sits in the rain shadow of the mountains and looks more like the Tibetan plateau than the lush hills further south.
Muktinath, on the far side of the pass, is one of the holiest sites in Nepal for both Hindus and Buddhists, drawing pilgrims from across the region, while Jomsom and the Kali Gandaki valley below it offer a dramatic final stretch of high desert scenery before the flight to Pokhara.

Dining rooms double as the main gathering point each evening, since rooms rarely have their own heating. A four season sleeping bag rated for sub-zero temperatures is essential rather than optional on this route, given the cold nights on the approach to Thorong La.
