Covering some of Morocco's most varied landscapes, this six-day adventure begins in Marrakech before travelling across the High Atlas Mountains and into the vast Sahara Desert. Once you reach Mhamid, the road disappears and the pace changes completely as camels become your companions for the days ahead.
Designed for travellers who enjoy walking and discovering remote places, the trek combines daily hikes with comfortable desert camps, freshly prepared meals and time to appreciate the peaceful surroundings. Every day introduces new scenery, from towering sand dunes and dry riverbeds to palm groves, small villages and endless open desert.
Backed by more than 15 years of experience leading journeys throughout Morocco, our team focuses on providing genuine desert experiences that combine adventure with local knowledge. Every trip is led by fully trained CFAMM-certified guides who know the region well and are passionate about sharing its history, landscapes and traditions.
Carefully planned logistics allow you to enjoy the trek without worrying about carrying heavy equipment, as camels transport your luggage between camps. Alongside experienced camel handlers and a dedicated support team, you'll travel safely while enjoying authentic hospitality throughout the journey.
Your adventure begins with collection from Marrakech Airport or your accommodation before travelling south across the spectacular High Atlas Mountains. Along the way, you'll stop to explore the UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou, one of Morocco's most famous fortified villages, where you'll also have time for lunch.
Continuing through the beautiful Draa Valley, the scenery gradually changes as palm groves replace mountain landscapes and the edge of the Sahara approaches. After arriving in Mhamid, you'll settle into your hotel, enjoy dinner and prepare for the trekking adventure beginning the following morning.
Following breakfast, you'll meet the camel team, guides and cook before setting off into the desert. The day's walk follows sandy trails, open plains and smaller dunes, allowing plenty of opportunities to appreciate the peaceful atmosphere that makes this part of the Sahara so special.
After a relaxing lunch stop, the afternoon continues towards the dunes of Sidi Naji where camp is prepared for the evening. Before dinner, you'll have free time to explore the surrounding dunes, watch the changing colours at sunset or simply relax beneath the open sky.
Today's trek ventures further into the Sahara towards the magnificent Erg Ezzahar, crossing wide desert plateaus before reaching one of the region's most impressive dune systems. As the dunes become larger, panoramic views open across the dry Draa River and the surrounding desert landscape.
Camp is set among the golden sand dunes, creating one of the most memorable evenings of the trip. During warmer months, guests may even choose to sleep beneath the stars while listening to the silence of the Sahara.
Leaving Erg Ezzahar behind, the route follows a varied landscape of rolling dunes, rocky terrain and sections of the Draa riverbed lined with palm trees and native desert vegetation. Your guide will point out the plants and wildlife that have adapted to life in this challenging environment.
After lunch, the trek continues towards another remote campsite where the support team prepares a traditional Moroccan tagine. As daylight fades across the dunes, you'll have another opportunity to enjoy the peaceful surroundings before settling in for the night.
Today's walk introduces another side of the desert as the route passes through smaller dunes, green oases and traditional villages. The changing scenery provides a fascinating contrast to the previous days spent among the larger sand dunes while offering an insight into daily life on the edge of the Sahara.
Your final evening is spent in a fixed camp near Ouled Driss, where you'll have access to a warm shower and comfortable facilities before enjoying one last dinner with your guides and fellow travellers.
After breakfast, it's time to begin the return journey north. Travelling through Ouarzazate with a lunch stop along the way, you'll once again cross the spectacular High Atlas Mountains before arriving back in Marrakech during the early evening.
Drop-off is provided at your accommodation, bringing an end to six memorable days exploring Morocco's remarkable desert landscapes.
Accommodation has been chosen to complement each stage of the journey. Your first night is spent in a hotel in Mhamid before moving into comfortable desert camps for the trekking section, with shared tents accommodating two people.
The final evening takes place at a fixed camp in Ouled Driss, where additional facilities such as showers are available before returning to Marrakech the following day. Throughout the trek, the support team prepares the camps ahead of your arrival, allowing you to relax after each day's walk.
Although this is a multi-day trek, it has been designed for people with a reasonable level of fitness rather than experienced hikers. Daily walks generally last between four and six hours, with plenty of stops for rest, lunch and photographs, allowing you to enjoy the experience at a comfortable pace.
The terrain varies throughout the journey, including sand dunes, rocky plateaus, dry riverbeds and flatter desert sections. Your guide adjusts the pace to suit the group, making the experience achievable for most active travellers who enjoy walking.
Despite the name, this is primarily a trekking experience rather than a camel riding tour. The camels are mainly responsible for carrying luggage, camping equipment and supplies between each overnight stop, allowing you to walk freely without carrying heavy bags.
There may be opportunities to spend short periods riding a camel depending on conditions and the guide's advice, but the focus of the journey is exploring the Sahara on foot alongside the camel caravan.
Accommodation changes as the journey progresses. The first evening is spent in a hotel in Mhamid before moving into traditional desert camps for several nights, where you'll sleep in shared tents for two people surrounded by the peaceful Sahara landscape.
The final night takes place in a fixed camp at Ouled Driss, offering more permanent facilities including showers. Camps are prepared by the support team before your arrival each afternoon, so everything is ready when you finish walking.
Dinner is included on the first evening, while full board is provided throughout the trekking section of the adventure. Meals are freshly prepared by the accompanying cook and typically include traditional Moroccan dishes made using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.
Breakfasts are served before setting off each morning, lunches are enjoyed during scenic rest stops, and evenings conclude with freshly cooked dinners around the camp after a full day of trekking.
The overall difficulty is considered easy to moderate, making it suitable for most people who regularly enjoy walking. Some days involve walking through soft sand, which can require more effort than normal trails, while other sections follow firmer ground and desert plateaus.
No technical climbing or specialist trekking skills are required, but being comfortable walking for several hours each day will help you get the most from the experience.
Lightweight walking clothes, comfortable footwear and a small daypack are essential for daytime trekking. Temperatures can change considerably between day and night, particularly from December to March, so a warm jacket and suitable sleeping bag are strongly recommended.
You'll also need a reusable water bottle, sun protection, a head torch and personal toiletries. Because your luggage is carried by camels, you only need to carry your daily essentials while walking.
Once the trek leaves Mhamid and heads deeper into the Sahara, mobile phone coverage becomes very limited and is unavailable in many areas. Many travellers enjoy this opportunity to disconnect from everyday life and fully appreciate the peaceful surroundings.
Your guides remain equipped to manage the journey safely, and the support team are experienced in operating in these remote areas. It's a good idea to let family or friends know that communication may be limited during the trek.
