What to Expect

You’ll be collected from your accommodation in Marrakech and driven to Imlil, the well-known gateway to Morocco’s High Atlas trails. From here, the run begins with a steep ascent of the Tizi Mzik pass, offering early panoramic views. After a short descent into the valley of Tizi Oussem, the route climbs steadily on a high balcony path towards Azib Tamsoult, a remote cluster of shepherd shelters used in summer.

From there, the real effort begins. The climb to the Tizi n Tziki col is tough, but an optional side-trip to the summit of Adrar Adj (3100m+) provides a worthwhile challenge and incredible views across the Imlil basin. After regrouping, the descent is sharp and technical, following singletrack trails that wind through high pasture and pine forest before reaching Aroumd village. You’ll pass the waterfalls and historic Kasbah du Toubkal before arriving back in Imlil, where transport will return you to Marrakech.

This route is ideal for those wanting to prepare for Toubkal or other alpine trail runs, offering varied terrain, altitude adaptation, and full logistical support in a single, scenic day.

Location

This trail running experience takes place in the High Atlas Mountains, starting and ending in the village of Imlil, roughly 90 minutes from Marrakech. The route climbs through two remote mountain passes and traverses traditional Berber valleys, finishing via Aroumd village with views of Mount Toubkal and the surrounding peaks. 

You'll be transported to and from the trailhead, with plenty of time to take in the unique mountain landscape.

Prerequisites

Participants should be confident running on mountain trails and capable of handling a full day of steep ascents and descents. While previous experience at altitude is not essential, a good base level of fitness is necessary to enjoy the day.

Trail shoes with grip are highly recommended, and weather-appropriate clothing is essential due to changing mountain conditions.
