Green turtles grazing on seagrass at Abu Dabbab make this one of the Red Sea’s most memorable snorkeling experiences. Travel south from Hurghada for a full-day coastal adventure with hotel pickup and lunch included, with around ten hours from pickup to return.
South along the coast the morning unfolds as open road and then the curve into Abu Dabbab bay, where shallow water turns pale green over seagrass. After kit and a brief on sharing the water with turtles, you snorkel with a guide above the grass, scanning for slow-moving shapes below. Other reef fish are common companions on the same route.
Shallow bay water keeps the session relaxed, with time to look down without diving deep. Lunch at a beachfront table breaks up the afternoon before the return run north. Turtles may graze within view if the day is kind; if not, the grass, coral edges and clear water still make the long coast-road day worthwhile.
Hurghada sit further north on Egypt's Red Sea coast, with long resort strips facing open water. Abu Dabbab itself is a shallow bay further south, known for seagrass beds close to the beach where turtles feed. Reaching it from these hotels means a proper coast-road day, with time in the van as well as time in the water. Wind, sea state and traffic all shape how the hours land.
Once lunch is done, the return run brings you back into the Hurghada hotel belt for the evening. Resort life here is built around the sea, so a bay day like this sits beside other water plans only if you leave the whole day clear. Share your resort name so the van can collect you from the right strip. Guests staying well outside those hotel zones should wait for confirmation that collection still applies.
No snorkel qualification is required. Putting your face in the sea with a mask and sitting through a long, air-conditioned transfer should feel comfortable. First-time snorkelers and guests who already swim with a mask can share the same bay. Say if you would rather stay in the shallows so the guide can keep you nearby on the surface.
Swimwear under a light cover-up works well, plus shoes you can slip off at the water. A towel, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a dry layer for the long transfer are worth bringing. Valuables are safest in the hotel safe. Young guests can join if they are happy in the water with a mask; very young children may stay on the beach rather than in the water.
Matching the van to your hotel happens when you book, so Hurghada guests share the same bay and the same day shape. Kit, a guide in the water and a sit-down lunch keep a long coast-road outing simple to join. A small group follows one route over the seagrass rather than fanning out across the bay.
Wildlife is treated as a chance, with a clear brief on giving turtles room and keeping hands off the grass. Say if anyone needs a lighter plate so that can be passed on before lunch. If the water is unsuitable, the start time may shift or you may move to another slot the same day, so stay reachable on the morning of the outing.
Hotel pickup in the Hurghada area is followed by a longer transfer south to Abu Dabbab. Use the travel time to apply sunscreen, pack a dry layer, and let us know if anyone in your group has never snorkeled before.
Please stay at your hotel reception during the pickup window so the driver can easily find you.
At the bay you fit a mask, snorkel and fins and hear a short brief on how to share the water with turtles: stay on the surface, give them room, and keep off the seagrass.
Ask now if you would rather stay in the shallows close to the beach.
You snorkel with a guide over seagrass and nearby coral. Green turtles often graze here; watch from a respectful distance. Other fish are common. A dugong is a rare extra, not something to count on.
Stay with the group and follow the guide's route rather than chasing animals across the bay.
Lunch is included after the snorkel, typically at a beachfront restaurant near the bay. Then you transfer back to your Hurghada hotel on the same pickup run.
Allow the full ten-hour window so you are not cutting lunch or the last stretch of road short.
