Designed for aspiring beach lifeguards and surf safety professionals, this intensive five-day SLSGB NVBLQ course develops the practical rescue skills, fitness standards and safety knowledge required for working on beaches in the UK and internationally. Combining classroom learning with realistic ocean-based training, the course prepares candidates for professional lifeguarding environments and emergency response situations.
Training begins with introductions at the harbour training base before moving into the first classroom and practical sessions covering lifeguard procedures, safety awareness and course expectations. Across the five days, candidates work through a combination of fitness assessments, rescue scenarios, first aid training and ocean-based practical exercises designed to prepare them for real lifeguarding situations.
Practical sessions take place across a variety of beaches and coastal locations around Cornwall depending on the conditions, allowing candidates to experience different surf environments and rescue scenarios. Training includes rescue board work, casualty handling, spinal injury management, surveillance skills and operating procedures used within professional beach lifeguarding settings. Candidates are also coached through teamwork exercises, environmental assessments and working alongside emergency services.
The course includes both training and formal assessment elements, with instructors supporting candidates throughout the process while still maintaining the high standards expected within the SLSGB pathway. Timed swim and run fitness tests form part of the qualification, alongside practical rescue assessments and theory-based learning. Returning to the harbour base each day, candidates have access to classrooms, changing facilities and refreshments between sessions.
Operating from Newquay Harbour provides direct access to a variety of coastal training environments suitable for lifeguard development. Sheltered harbour areas allow controlled skills practice, while nearby surf beaches and open coastline create realistic rescue training conditions throughout the course.
The surrounding Cornwall coastline offers varied beaches and sea conditions which help prepare candidates for working in different lifeguarding environments. This flexibility allows instructors to adapt locations depending on the weather and surf conditions each day.
Candidates must hold valid SLSGB membership before attending the course and complete the required pre-course literature provided once registered. Participants must also feel confident within surf zone conditions and be physically prepared for intensive practical training across multiple days.
For the Surf Endorsed Lifeguard qualification, candidates must complete a 400m pool swim in under 7 minutes 30 seconds. For the Beach Lifeguard pathway, the required time is under 8 minutes.
Using years of lifeguarding, coastal rescue and watersports training experience, the instructors focus on delivering practical, realistic coaching in a professional but supportive environment. Training takes place across some of Cornwall’s best coastal locations, helping candidates build confidence in genuine surf and rescue conditions rather than purely classroom-based scenarios.
Mel helps ensure candidates feel prepared before arriving on the course, while the wider instructor team brings extensive operational lifeguarding and rescue experience into every training session. Operating directly from Newquay Harbour also provides access to excellent facilities including classrooms, changing areas, equipment storage and nearby training beaches.
