Exploring the southern slopes of Morocco's Anti-Atlas, this multi-day trek combines dramatic volcanic scenery with authentic cultural experiences. Travelling from Marrakech to Nkob before setting off on foot, the route passes deep valleys, rocky plateaus, mountain passes and traditional Amazigh settlements that remain largely unchanged by modern tourism.
Suitable for walkers looking for a moderate hiking adventure, the itinerary balances rewarding days on the trail with comfortable camps and opportunities to learn about the traditions of the Ait Atta people. The varied terrain, peaceful surroundings and distinctive landscapes make Jbel Saghro one of Morocco's most rewarding alternatives to the High Atlas.
Focusing on lesser-known mountain regions, this trek introduces you to a side of Morocco that many visitors never experience. The route has been carefully planned to showcase the remarkable geology of Jbel Saghro while providing genuine opportunities to interact with local Amazigh communities along the way.
Throughout the journey, experienced CFAMM-certified mountain guides, muleteers and support staff take care of the logistics, allowing you to enjoy each day's walk without carrying heavy equipment. Their knowledge of the mountains, local culture and seasonal conditions helps create an enjoyable and well-supported trekking experience.
Leaving Marrakech in the morning, you'll travel across the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass before descending towards the famous Draa Valley. Along the way there are opportunities to stop for photographs and enjoy the changing scenery as fertile valleys gradually give way to the drier landscapes of southern Morocco.
After lunch, the journey continues to Nkob, where you'll spend the evening preparing for the trekking adventure while enjoying the peaceful surroundings of this traditional village.
Following breakfast, you'll meet the mule team before beginning the trek through the Ousdiden Valley. The route introduces the distinctive volcanic scenery that defines Jbel Saghro, with wide open landscapes and quiet mountain trails stretching into the distance.
After lunch in the mountains, the trail continues towards the impressive Bab n'Ali rock formations. Camp is established beneath these dramatic volcanic towers after approximately six and a half hours of walking.
Today's route passes through some of the massif's most remarkable geological landscapes, including the unusual rock formations of Tadawt n'Tblah. The scenery changes constantly throughout the day, with volcanic ridges, open valleys and weathered stone creating a striking backdrop for the trek.
After around six hours on the trail, you'll arrive at Ighazzoun, where camp is set beside the river, providing a peaceful place to relax after the day's walk.
A steady climb leads towards the Tizi Olhyan Pass before the trail descends into the beautiful Tifdassine Valley. Along the way you'll pass through several traditional Amazigh villages where everyday life continues much as it has for generations.
After approximately five and a half hours of hiking, you'll reach Handour, where the final campsite is surrounded by palm groves and impressive mountain scenery.
The trekking section concludes as you leave Handour and begin the drive back towards Marrakech. Travelling once again through the Draa Valley, you'll stop in Ouarzazate for lunch and time to explore the city before crossing the High Atlas Mountains on the return journey.
Arriving back in Marrakech during the evening marks the end of your trekking adventure through the Jbel Saghro Massif.
Your first evening is spent in a comfortable mountain lodge in Nkob before moving into fully supported camps for the trekking section of the itinerary. Spacious shared tents and foam mattresses are provided, allowing comfortable overnight stays in carefully selected mountain locations.
Each campsite is prepared by the accompanying support team before your arrival, while freshly prepared meals are served throughout the trek. This allows you to relax at the end of each walking day while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the mountains.
Yes. Compared with some of Morocco's more demanding mountain expeditions, this itinerary is graded as moderate and can be suitable for active families with older children who are already comfortable walking for several hours each day.
Parents should still consider the consecutive hiking days, uneven terrain and remote camping conditions before booking, but many families find this route to be an enjoyable introduction to multi-day trekking in Morocco.
This itinerary follows a shorter route while still including many of the region's best-known highlights, including Bab n'Ali, the Draa Valley and several traditional Amazigh villages. It provides a rewarding introduction to the Saghro Massif without spending as many days in the mountains.
The shorter duration also makes it a good option for travellers with limited time who still want to experience the distinctive volcanic landscapes of southern Morocco.
Bab n'Ali is one of the most famous natural landmarks in Jbel Saghro. The dramatic volcanic towers rise sharply above the surrounding landscape and have become one of the region's defining features for hikers and photographers alike.
Camping nearby gives you the opportunity to appreciate the formations during both sunset and sunrise, when the changing light highlights the remarkable colours and textures of the rock.
Yes. The route passes through several Amazigh villages where you can observe everyday life in one of Morocco's most traditional mountain regions. Depending on the season, you may also encounter members of the Ait Atta community moving livestock through the mountains.
Your guide will explain local customs, history and traditions throughout the journey, helping you gain a better understanding of the people who have lived in these landscapes for generations.
The scenery changes significantly throughout the trek, beginning with the fertile Draa Valley before moving into the volcanic mountains of Jbel Saghro. Along the way you'll experience rocky valleys, open plateaus, unusual volcanic formations, mountain passes and peaceful palm groves.
Unlike the greener High Atlas, Jbel Saghro has a more rugged appearance that creates a very different atmosphere while still offering rewarding views throughout the route.
Most walking days last between five and six and a half hours, with a mixture of gradual climbs, descents and sections across rocky mountain terrain. The pace is steady, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and take regular breaks.
Although a reasonable level of fitness is recommended, there are no technical climbing sections, making the trek suitable for most regular hikers.
Yes. Mules accompany the group every day, transporting the main luggage, camping equipment and food between campsites. This means you'll only need to carry a lightweight backpack with the items required during the day's walk.
Having luggage transported allows you to enjoy the trek much more comfortably while covering longer distances across the mountains.
