Created for aspiring commercial coasteering guides, this two-day NCC Coasteering Guide Training Award develops the practical guiding, rescue and operational skills required for working within professional coasteering environments. Combining classroom learning with practical coastal training, the course forms the first official step within the NCC guide development pathway.
Training begins at the harbour base with introductions, course briefings and an overview of NCC operational standards before moving into practical coastal sessions. Across the two days, candidates work through the core skills required for commercial coasteering leadership, combining practical rescue training with guiding techniques, route planning and safety management within real coastal environments.
Practical sessions take place across a variety of coasteering locations around Cornwall depending on sea conditions and route suitability. Candidates learn how to assess routes, manage groups safely, deliver effective safety briefings and respond to incidents within challenging coastal terrain. Rescue scenarios, casualty recovery techniques and emergency planning all form key parts of the programme, alongside environmental awareness and working alongside emergency services when required.
Throughout the course, instructors provide coaching and feedback designed to help candidates understand both the practical and operational responsibilities of commercial coasteering leadership. The programme also introduces operating procedures, route grading systems and first aid considerations specific to coasteering environments. Returning to the harbour base each day, candidates have access to changing facilities, classrooms and training equipment between sessions.
Operating from Newquay Harbour provides direct access to a wide variety of coasteering environments suitable for practical guide training. The surrounding Cornwall coastline includes rocky shorelines, tidal features, access points and coastal terrain ideal for developing guiding and rescue skills within realistic conditions.
The flexibility of nearby locations allows instructors to choose suitable training venues depending on tides, swell and weather conditions throughout the course.
Candidates should already hold at least 10 hours of personal coasteering experience alongside 10 hours of commercial coasteering experience before attending the programme.
A first aid qualification is recommended prior to attendance, although it may also be completed after the course. Candidates must also complete the required pre-course online learning module and hold valid NCC membership.
Using more than two decades of operational coasteering experience, the instructor team delivers realistic guide training built around current NCC standards and commercial guiding expectations. Training takes place within genuine coastal environments, helping candidates develop practical confidence alongside technical understanding.
Sam brings over 25 years of coasteering experience and remains one of only two NCC Trainer Assessors in Cornwall, having also contributed directly to the development of the NCC guide award pathway. Combined with experienced instructors and direct harbour access, candidates benefit from professional coaching within varied coastal terrain throughout the programme.
