What to Expect
The one-day course is ideal for those seeking a quick introduction to navigation. You'll cover essential skills like map reading, understanding symbols, using a compass, and relating map features to the surrounding terrain. The focus is on providing practical tips and ample hands-on practice so you can navigate with confidence by the end of the day. You'll also learn to measure distances, take bearings, and plan routes effectively.
For a deeper dive into navigation, the two-day course allows more time to consolidate skills and explore advanced techniques. Building on the first day, you'll practise handling unexpected scenarios, such as relocating when you've gone off track. You'll also learn advanced methods like triangulation, aiming off, and using the 4 Ds (distance, direction, duration, and description) to fine-tune your navigation. The slower pace gives plenty of time for questions, reflection, and practice, ensuring you leave with a comprehensive understanding of how to navigate independently.
Throughout the course, we'll also discuss and demonstrate common mistakes, such as misreading terrain or inaccurate bearings, to help you avoid these pitfalls. Our aim is to ensure you're confident in using your skills for real-world adventures, whether on familiar trails or exploring new locations.
