Winter climbing offers a unique and challenging adventure set against the backdrop of the UK’s changing winter landscape. Whether you're new to winter climbing or seeking to tackle a classic climb, the experience is tailored to your skill level and interests. With expert instruction and a variety of routes to explore, each session ensures you gain practical knowledge and confidence for future climbs.
The day begins with an introduction to the techniques needed for the terrain and conditions, focusing on movement and equipment use. You'll learn how to navigate steep ice, mixed surfaces, and snow, practising with ice axes and crampons. The instructor will guide you in building belays, placing ice screws, and managing rope systems.
If you're ready for lead climbing, the instructor will coach you through route selection, gear placement, and building anchors, ensuring a safe and productive experience. For those not ready to lead, the day will still include plenty of hands-on learning and exciting climbs suited to your ability. Popular routes include Tower Ridge, Point 5 Gully, and Golden Oldy, though the exact location will depend on weather and snow conditions.
The majority of sessions are based in Scotland, with access to some of the country's most renowned climbing locations such as Ben Nevis, Glencoe, and Cairngorms.
When conditions allow, we also offer sessions in the Lake District, making it a versatile option for winter climbing enthusiasts.
Participants should have a reasonable level of fitness, as winter climbing involves demanding physical activity, including long and challenging approaches to the climbs.
No prior climbing experience is required, but confidence in outdoor activities and willingness to learn are essential.
With years of experience as a Mountain Instructor and Winter Mountain Leader, our founder combines technical expertise with a passion for sharing knowledge. Each course is carefully designed to be safe, engaging, and informative, ensuring participants leave with both new skills and unforgettable memories.
Operating since 2003, we’ve built a reputation for professionalism, quality instruction, and genuine enthusiasm for the outdoors. Whether you’re here to try something new or refine your skills, the focus is on making your time in the mountains enjoyable and rewarding.
A moderate to high level of fitness is needed as winter climbing involves strenuous activities such as steep ascents and long walks to the climbing routes.
Being comfortable with sustained physical effort will ensure you get the most out of your session.
No prior climbing experience is necessary for the beginner sessions, as all essential techniques and skills will be taught on the day.
However, a willingness to learn and a positive attitude toward challenging activities are important.
Participants should bring warm, layered clothing, waterproofs, gloves, and a hat suitable for winter conditions.
Sturdy boots are essential, and if you don’t own B3-rated climbing boots, these can be hired.
Ice axes, crampons, and other technical gear are also available to hire if required.
While the instructor selects locations based on current weather and snow conditions, participant preferences can be considered.
Most sessions are held in Scotland, but the Lake District may be an option if conditions allow.
Safety is always the top priority. If conditions are deemed unsafe, the session may be rescheduled, or an alternative activity such as a winter skills course may be offered.

Had the benefit of having Paul to myself for this Hike up Helvellyn on Sun 12/10/25 on a on to one. Paul was welcoming, and very personable / friendly. He provided plenty of advice from walking & breathing techniques & walking with poles. Paul showed a lot of patience with…
Our time outdoor climbing with Paul was great! It was our first time trad climbing and also doing a multi-pitch climb.
