Honduras is the Caribbean side of Central America that still feels like a dive-and-jungle country rather than a resort strip. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef wraps the Bay Islands. Cloud forest rises behind La Ceiba. Maya ruins sit in cool western highlands. The Mosquitia remains one of the region's last big rainforest blocks. Distances on a map look small. Roatán to Copán is a morning of flights and roads if connections work. Weather, ferries and the rainy season decide the week more than kilometres do.
Bay Islands diving
You'll probably come for the water. Bay Islands (Roatán, Utila and quieter Guanaja in Islas de la Bahía) sit on the reef with walls, wrecks and a Utila scuba diving scene known for whale sharks in season. That window is wildlife, not a timetable. Snorkelling and freediving use the same shores. Book reef days around wind and swell. Utila is the cheaper, backpacker dive hub. Roatán is the more developed west-end base.
North coast, Pico Bonito and Cayos Cochinos
On the mainland, North Coast & Pico Bonito is the wet, green counterpart. Atlántida holds La Ceiba, Pico Bonito hiking and Cangrejal rafting, plus Tela beaches and boat days to Cayos Cochinos. Cortés is the San Pedro Sula airport and western Lake Yojoa shore. Colón is quieter Trujillo and the Garifuna coast toward the Mosquitia. June to November is wetter. Trails mud, rivers rise, and that's often when rafting is at its best.
Copán highlands, Yojoa and the Mosquitia
Copán & Western Highlands is cooler: ruin-side walks at Copán, Celaque cloud forest in Lempira, Lenca trails in Intibucá. Tegucigalpa & Lake Yojoa is the capital gateway. La Tigra day hikes leave from Francisco Morazán. Kayaking and birding on the lake start from Comayagua and Santa Bárbara. Mosquitia & Olancho is a different trip. Río Plátano river travel in Gracias a Dios and remote forest in Olancho need specialist operators and buffer days, not a weekend add-on.
Where to base yourself
Use the Bay Islands for diving. Use La Ceiba / Pico Bonito for rainforest and rafting. Use Copán for highlands and ruins. Use Tegucigalpa or Yojoa if you're connecting inland. Few itineraries do islands, Copán and Mosquitia in one week without rushing.

Open-water beginner dive courses and Pico Bonito day hikes are the usual first bookings. Whale-shark windows, Celaque summit days and Mosquitia expeditions sit at improver and advanced.
