If you’re struggling to catch green waves, focus on timing, positioning, and paddle technique:
- Sit in the right spot – Too far out, and you’ll miss the wave. Too close, and it will break on top of you. Watch experienced surfers to see where the sweet spot is.
- Angle your takeoff – Instead of dropping straight down, turn your board slightly toward the wave’s shoulder (the part of the wave that hasn’t broken yet). This gives you more time to set up your ride.
- Commit to your paddle – You need to generate enough speed to match the wave’s momentum. Paddle strong and deep for the last 3-5 strokes before popping up.
- Look down the line – Keep your eyes on where you want to go, not at your feet. Your body follows your vision.
If you’re consistently just behind the wave (missing it) or too late (getting caught in the lip), adjust your positioning slightly further inside or outside until you find the right takeoff zone.
If you feel like your progress has plateaued, then it might be time for a private lesson. It can really help you identify whats holding you back to enable focused practice. Check out adventuro's intermediate surfing lessons above.
