Somerset and Dorset combine the Jurassic Coast with inland lakes, offering sailing, sea kayaking, windsurfing and paddleboarding across South West England. Learn to sail and windsurf on coastal waters and reservoirs, kayak beneath the fossil cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, and paddleboard sheltered harbours and bays. Beginner courses sit alongside trips for the more experienced, making it a versatile base for watersports.
Somerset and Dorset share a border somewhere in the middle of a county that can't quite decide whether it's one place or two. For kayakers, the distinction barely matters. Dorset's Jurassic Coast — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has the good grace to be both beautiful and geologically interesting — is one of England's finest sea kayaking venues. Poole Harbour, in the county's far east, is an entirely different proposition: vast, sheltered and almost entirely protected from ocean swell. Somerset adds rivers, canals and the occasionally dramatic Bristol Channel to the mix. Together they cover most of what you'd want from English kayaking.
Poole Harbour is one of the world's largest natural harbours by surface area, and on a calm day it's an exceptional flatwater paddling environment — sheltered, wildlife-rich and with a range of launch points. The paddle to Brownsea Island (National Trust, famous for red squirrels and ospreys in season) is a popular half-day destination. The Jurassic Coast between Swanage and Lyme Regis is the headline act for sea kayaking — Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, the chalk stacks at Old Harry Rocks, sea caves worn into the cliff at Dancing Ledge. These are routes best done with a qualified guide; the tidal currents on this coast are significant and the cliff faces don't break your fall. That said, with the right preparation and leadership, it's extraordinary.
Somerset's rivers offer a different kind of paddling entirely. The River Avon through the Somerset countryside, sections of the Kennet and Avon Canal and the quieter stretches of the River Brue give calm, pastoral paddling through the Levels and Moors landscape — flat, wide, undemanding and genuinely relaxing. The Bristol Channel at the county's northern edge is strictly for experienced tidal paddlers; the tidal range here is the second largest in the world, and it commands considerable respect.
The Jurassic Coast's appeal is matched by its technical demands. Tidal streams run strongly along the cliffs and around the headlands — the race off Portland Bill is one of the most powerful tidal races in the English Channel and not somewhere to wander into accidentally. Guidance is non-negotiable for newcomers to this coast; even experienced paddlers should familiarise themselves with the specific tidal patterns before planning independent routes. For all other kayaking in Somerset and Dorset, standard sea sense applies: check conditions, tell someone your plan, don't push weather windows.
Beginner sessions typically run on Poole Harbour or the sheltered Somerset rivers and last two to three hours, covering paddle technique, basic manoeuvring and safety procedures. Sea kayaking day trips on the Jurassic Coast are typically guided, running from a launch point to a scenic lunch spot and back. Equipment — kayak, paddle, buoyancy aid, wetsuit — is provided by all listed centres.
