Cornwall is arguably the birthplace of British coasteering and remains its spiritual home. The county's granite and slate coastline, shaped by full Atlantic exposure, offers everything the activity demands: deep, clear plunge pools beneath cliffs, sea caves and gullies to swim through, natural rock platforms to jump from, and traverses along surge-washed ledges. From the surf beaches of the north coast to the sheltered creeks of the south and the wild granite of the Land's End peninsula, there is a coasteering venue to suit every tide, swell and ability level.
North coast and south coast
The north Cornish coast — Newquay, Bude, Padstow and the Atlantic-facing cliffs — delivers the more dramatic, swell-influenced coasteering, with bigger jumps and more powerful water. The south coast and the far west around St Ives and Penzance offer more sheltered options and exceptional water clarity. Guides select the venue on the day according to conditions, which is why coasteering in Cornwall is so consistently good: there is almost always somewhere working well.
What a session involves
A typical coasteering session lasts two to three hours and combines swimming, scrambling, traversing and cliff jumping, with the level of challenge tailored to the group. Wetsuits, helmets and buoyancy aids are provided; you need to be able to swim and be reasonably comfortable in the sea. Jumps are always optional — guides offer a range of heights and no one is ever pushed beyond what they want to do.
