The Lake District is England's premier open canoeing destination. Cumbria's sixteen major lakes — Windermere, Coniston, Ullswater, Derwentwater and the rest — together with the rivers and tarns of the surrounding fells, offer open canoe touring of a quality found nowhere else in England. The traditional Canadian canoe is the ideal craft here: stable, able to carry camping kit and children, and perfectly suited to the longer lakes where you can paddle for hours between mountain-backed shores, landing on quiet beaches that no path reaches.
Lake touring and canoe camping
The longer lakes lend themselves to touring: a full day's paddle down Windermere or Ullswater, or a multi-day trip linking lakes via portage and river, camping on the shore. Several Cumbrian centres run guided canoe-camping expeditions that handle the logistics and navigation, leaving you to enjoy the paddling. The quieter lakes — Crummock Water, Buttermere, the head of Ullswater — offer the most immersive experience, especially outside the peak summer weeks.
Guided days for all abilities
You don't need to commit to an expedition. Many centres run half- and full-day guided canoe sessions suitable for complete beginners and families, on sheltered stretches of the larger lakes. These combine basic paddle instruction with a relaxed exploration of the shoreline and its wildlife.
