AIDA Level 3 Advanced Freediving Course in Lanzarote

Before enrolling, you must have completed the AIDA 2 course or hold an equivalent certification from another recognised freediving organisation. This ensures you already have a solid understanding of basic freediving techniques, safety procedures, and open water experience. If you trained with a different agency, a crossover evaluation will confirm your readiness.

The course builds on these foundations by introducing advanced techniques like free-fall and Frenzel equalisation, so familiarity with pressure management and basic breath-hold skills is essential. This background helps you get the most from the training and maintain safety throughout the sessions.

All essential freediving equipment is provided, including wetsuits, masks, snorkels, fins, weights, and buoyancy aids. The centre uses high-quality gear from Cressi Apnea, which is regularly updated to maintain comfort and reliability. This means you don’t need to purchase or bring your own equipment unless you prefer to use personal items.

Participants are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing beneath the wetsuit, such as swimwear or rash guards. It’s also useful to bring towels and any personal items you may need for comfort, but the core gear for training and ocean sessions is fully supplied.

Safety is a top priority with a maximum instructor-to-student ratio of 1:3 on the buoy, allowing close supervision during all in-water activities. The team includes experienced instructors, assistant instructors and professional safety divers,  to ensure all participants receive individual attention and support. Safety briefings and buddy systems are strictly followed.

All practical sessions include surface support with trained staff ready to assist if necessary. The course also covers comprehensive safety theory, including recognition of shallow water blackout symptoms, risk management, and rescue procedures, helping students to dive responsibly and confidently.

While freediving requires good general fitness, it is more about controlled breathing, relaxation, and technique than raw strength. You should be comfortable swimming in open water and able to perform static apnea and dynamic apnea to the minimum course requirements.

If you have any health concerns, especially related to heart or lung conditions, it’s important to consult a medical professional before enrolling. The instructors will also conduct a health screening before starting the course to ensure it’s safe for you to participate.

The course includes several detailed theory sessions that cover freediving physiology, equalisation techniques, pressure-related injuries like barotrauma, and the mammalian dive reflex. These sessions aim to deepen your understanding of how the body reacts underwater and how to manage those effects safely.

Other topics include training concepts, decompression sickness, surface intervals, freediving safety protocols, and the freediver’s code of conduct. The theory prepares you to make informed decisions and dive safely in a variety of conditions, and you’ll complete a multiple-choice exam to demonstrate your knowledge.

To complete the course successfully, you must reach a minimum static apnea time of 2 minutes 45 seconds, swim 55 metres in dynamic apnea with fins, and complete a constant weight bi-fins dive to 24 metres. These standards demonstrate your ability to perform safely at advanced freediving levels.

Alongside physical requirements, you must pass a theory exam with at least 75%. The combination of practical and theoretical assessments ensures you are well-prepared for safe advanced freediving beyond the course.

Accommodation and transport to and from the meeting point are not included in the course fee and must be organised independently. The dive school is centrally located in Puerto del Carmen, making it easy to find local hotels, guesthouses, or rental options nearby.

Public transport and taxi services are available locally, and many students choose to stay within walking distance of the dive school to simplify logistics. Detailed directions are provided upon booking to assist with planning your arrival and daily travel.

Yes, you can book on your own, but a minimum of two participants is required for the course to run. If you're the only person booked on your preferred dates, the team will do their best to pair you with another student or offer alternative dates where others are already confirmed.

This approach helps keep sessions effective and safe, particularly for buddy work during pool and open-water training. Solo bookings are common, and most students are open to pairing up, so in most cases, it’s easy to find a match without delay.
