Advance your navigation skills and deepen your understanding of seamanship with this intensive theory course. Designed for sailors aiming to skipper longer coastal and offshore passages, it builds on foundational knowledge to cover complex navigation techniques, meteorology, and passage planning. Participants are fully prepared to take the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore practical exams.
The course begins with a detailed review of chartwork and navigation techniques. You will practice coastal navigation exercises, plotting positions, and calculating tidal streams and set/drift to strengthen your practical understanding. Emphasis is placed on interpreting Admiralty charts and electronic navigation tools in real-world scenarios.
As the programme continues, instructors introduce complex passage planning. You will learn to assess weather forecasts, predict tidal changes, and plan routes for both day and night coastal passages. Scenario-based exercises challenge participants to make decisions under realistic navigation conditions, simulating potential challenges you may face offshore.
The final days focus on integrating all skills, including the interpretation of meteorological data, course shaping, and contingency planning. Instructors provide detailed feedback, answering questions and offering guidance on exam preparation. The course ensures you develop confidence and competence in advanced navigation and offshore passage management.
The course is based in Menai Bridge, offering access to the diverse tidal waters of Anglesey. The surrounding coastal environment provides practical examples of navigation hazards, safe harbours, and tidal challenges to support learning.
Menai Bridge is ideally situated to combine theory with local insight. Instructors use the surrounding waterways to illustrate concepts such as tidal streams, coastal landmarks, and electronic navigation, enhancing the practical relevance of the course material.
Participants should have a solid understanding of basic navigation, equivalent to the Day Skipper Theory course. This ensures they can follow advanced lessons without needing to cover fundamental concepts.
No previous offshore sailing experience is required. A willingness to engage fully with the course material and practice chartwork exercises is essential to achieve the learning outcomes.
The centre has a long history of delivering high-quality RYA shore-based courses, with instructors who bring both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Their understanding of Anglesey’s coastal waters allows them to provide real-world examples that make complex topics easier to grasp.
Small group sizes allow personalised instruction, ensuring each participant can ask questions and receive guidance tailored to their needs. The combination of focused teaching, scenario-based exercises, and expert feedback equips sailors with the knowledge to confidently tackle advanced coastal and offshore navigation challenges.
This course is designed for sailors who have completed the RYA Day Skipper Theory course or have equivalent knowledge. It is ideal for those preparing for the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore practical exams.
Participants who want to expand their knowledge of advanced navigation, tidal planning, and passage management will also benefit. The content is suitable for sailors aiming to skipper coastal and offshore passages confidently.
No prior practical offshore experience is required for this theory-based course. Participants must, however, have foundational knowledge of navigation, such as chartwork, tidal calculations, and collision regulations.
This ensures that advanced topics can be covered efficiently, allowing participants to focus on complex navigation scenarios without needing to revisit basic principles.
Participants will study advanced chartwork, coastal and offshore passage planning, tidal streams, set and drift calculations, and electronic navigation.
The course also covers meteorology, weather interpretation, collision regulations, and voyage planning techniques. Scenario-based exercises help integrate these skills for practical application in real-world conditions.
The course runs over five consecutive days, with each day combining theoretical lessons with interactive exercises. Participants are guided through increasingly complex navigation scenarios.
Scenario-based exercises simulate real-world challenges, encouraging problem-solving and decision-making. Instructors provide feedback and guidance throughout, ensuring participants gain confidence in advanced navigation.
All necessary course materials, including charts, publications, and exercises, are provided. Participants have access to printed and electronic navigation aids to support learning.
These materials can also be used for future reference when planning passages or preparing for other RYA qualifications.
Yes, the course concludes with an RYA examination to assess theoretical understanding and ensure readiness for practical assessments.
Passing the exam confirms that participants have the knowledge required to navigate safely and competently in coastal and offshore waters.
Groups are limited to 1–6 participants, providing personalised instruction and interaction with instructors.
This small group size ensures each student receives guidance tailored to their learning pace and can ask questions throughout the course.
Successful participants receive a certificate confirming their achievement and readiness for the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore practical exams.
The knowledge gained equips sailors with the confidence to plan and execute safe passages, understand tidal and weather influences, and make informed decisions in coastal and offshore waters.

The instructor/guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable, and we had great fun on the boat
We loved our boat trip, water doughnuts and speeding along 50mph + was great fun. Our skipper was lovely, very knowledgeable and enthusiasm shone through. Want to come back and see the puffins next year... although this was my soul reason to book this trip it really did not disappoint…
The Rib Tour was amazing! Exhilarating ride on the rib combined with fascinating facts about the coastline and the birds on puffin island. Highly recommended, will be booking the bridges tour next.
Exhilarating but also really informative. A great experience all round and highly recommended
Brilliant! Loved when Jason put the RIB into ‘sports mode’. Perfect mix of adventure and information. Beautiful scenery, great morning in the water. Cheers guys.
What a great experience. Our skipper, Jason, was great. Good chat, very knowledgable and really pushed the boat. The boat is an impressive thing which really moves. Great experience! Will be back to do the other tour.
Excellent!
Splendid trip!.....Captain was very knowledgeable.
We really enjoyed the boat trip to Puffin Island (2 August) - the people before us saw 2 puffins but even though we didn't it was still an exhilarating, (fast at times) and informative trip.
