Take your powerboating expertise to the next level with this two-day advanced course in the Solent. Designed for experienced operators, it focuses on refining handling, navigation, and decision-making skills in tidal coastal waters, including night operations. Practical exercises combined with expert instruction ensure confidence and competence on the water.
During the course, classroom sessions introduce advanced navigation, chartwork, GPS use, and collision regulations to prepare for coastal and night operations. This theoretical foundation ensures informed and safe decision-making.
On-water training develops high-speed manoeuvres, precise berthing, anchoring, springing, and man overboard recovery. Night exercises provide practical experience in low-light conditions, simulating realistic operational challenges.
Instruction is adapted to your skill level and vessel type, so every participant gains personalised guidance. By the end, you will be competent operating independently in tidal coastal waters and ready for commercial endorsement if required.
Courses take place in the Solent, offering tidal currents, navigational challenges, and busy traffic areas, providing an ideal setting for advanced skill development. The varied conditions ensure learners experience realistic scenarios while remaining safe.
Hamble serves as the base for launching and recovery, with easy access to pontoons, marinas, and open waters. This allows for seamless transitions between classroom and on-water exercises, including night navigation, in conditions representative of professional coastal operations.
Candidates must already hold an RYA Powerboat Level 3 (Intermediate) certificate and possess practical experience with planing powerboats in coastal waters. Knowledge equivalent to Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased is required.
First Aid and VHF/SRC certifications are strongly recommended. These ensure candidates can safely manage all exercises, including high-speed manoeuvres, night navigation, and emergency procedures in tidal waters.
Rob’s extensive experience as a global powerboat and sailing instructor ensures training is personalised, practical, and results-driven. His hands-on approach builds confidence and competence for real-world coastal operations.
Students benefit from a combination of structured theory and intensive on-water practice. Under Rob’s guidance, participants refine advanced skills, earn internationally recognised certification, and prepare for commercial endorsement or the Advanced Powerboat CoC exam.
This course is suitable for experienced operators who already hold Level 3 certification and want to refine skills in tidal coastal waters. It is also ideal for those wishing to operate confidently at night.
Participants will gain advanced handling, passage planning, emergency response, and decision-making skills applicable in real-world conditions.
Expect to practise high-speed manoeuvres, precise berthing, anchoring, springing techniques, and man overboard recovery. Night navigation and coastal passage planning are also key elements.
Theory complements practical sessions with charts, GPS, tides, and collision regulations, ensuring informed choices during exercises.
