Protecting children and vulnerable adults is part of the job for anyone who teaches or helps in a watersports setting. RYA Safe and Fun is the online safeguarding course Seawake offers so instructors, volunteers and club staff can work through the principles, the RYA code of conduct and the practical steps that keep young and vulnerable participants safe.
You work through the course online, in your own time. The modules cover the fundamentals of safeguarding, child protection, and the responsibilities of staff and volunteers in an RYA setting. Realistic scenarios and interactive exercises show how to respond to a concern and how to keep the session safe, rather than only reading a policy.
The course also covers the RYA code of conduct for working with children and vulnerable adults, and how to prevent abuse and handle an incident professionally. You can pause, go back and revisit a section. On completion you receive the RYA certificate that sits with instructor and volunteer roles.
Safe and Fun is completed fully online, so you can work through it at home. Seawake is based in Menai Bridge on the Isle of Anglesey, and this is the same RYA-recognised centre that runs our powerboat and instructor tickets.
If you are already on an instructor pathway with us, this online course sits alongside that training. You do not need to travel to High Street for the modules themselves.
No previous safeguarding qualification is required. The course is written as the RYA introduction, so it suits newly qualifying instructors as well as volunteers and club staff who have not sat a safeguarding module before.
You need a computer or tablet with internet access and around three hours. A willingness to work through the scenarios is enough. The minimum age on this listing is 16.
What makes a Seawake Powerboat Training course different is our team. We are all enthusiastic powerboaters with a vast amount of experience on the water, and Safe and Fun is the safeguarding module that sits with the instructor tickets we already run from Menai Bridge.
Our instructors come from varied backgrounds but have tonnes of experience and boating know-how in common. This online course uses the official RYA Safe and Fun content, so the certificate is the one the instructor scheme expects.
This course is for RYA instructors, volunteers and anyone working with children or vulnerable adults in a watersports setting. It is especially relevant for newly qualifying instructors and Senior Instructors who need safeguarding training before a practical instructor course.
Club staff and volunteers who look after young or vulnerable participants use the same modules. The aim is that you can recognise a risk, respond to a concern and run the session in a way that keeps people safe.
No. The course introduces safeguarding and child protection from the start, including the RYA code of conduct and the responsibilities that sit with staff and volunteers.
Scenarios and case studies show how the principles look in a real club or centre, whether or not you have taught before.
The course is designed as around three hours of learning. You work through it at your own pace, so it may take a little more or a little less depending on how you use the scenarios.
You can pause, go back and revisit a section. There is no need to sit the three hours in one go.
It is fully online. You complete it from home, or anywhere with an internet connection, using instructional material, interactive exercises and case studies.
You do not need to travel to Menai Bridge for the modules. The certificate is the official RYA Safe and Fun award.

Safeguarding sits with instructor and volunteer roles across the RYA. If you are heading toward the Seawake Powerboat Instructor course, Safe and Fun is the online module that covers the child protection and code of conduct the scheme expects.
The instructor course itself still has its own prerequisites, including Level 2, First Aid and enough seasons on the water. This listing is for the safeguarding course only.
A computer or tablet with internet access and a quiet place to work through the modules. No classroom visit and no kit from a boat are required.
The minimum age is 16. Set aside around three hours, with the option to pause if you want to think through a scenario before you move on.
The course is written as an online module, so most people complete it at home. Seawake is based at 40 High Street, Menai Bridge, and that is the centre that issues the course.
You do not need to travel for the modules themselves. If you are already in Menai Bridge for another ticket, you can still sit the online course on your own device.
The certificate shows you have completed the current RYA Safe and Fun training. Centres and clubs will ask to see it when you take on instructor or volunteer work with children or vulnerable adults.
If the RYA updates the module, you may be asked to sit the new version. Until then, keep the certificate with your other instructor paperwork.

We loved our boat trip, water doughnuts and speeding along 50mph + was great fun. Our skipper was lovely, very knowledgeable and enthusiasm shone through. Want to come back and see the puffins next year... although this was my soul reason to book this trip it really did not disappoint…
The Rib Tour was amazing! Exhilarating ride on the rib combined with fascinating facts about the coastline and the birds on puffin island. Highly recommended, will be booking the bridges tour next.
