Crevasse rescue is an essential skill for anyone planning to navigate high-altitude mountaineering, especially when crossing glaciers. This comprehensive course will teach you the vital techniques to safely manage crevasse accidents and improve your confidence in tackling challenging mountain terrain. Whether you are a beginner or looking to refine your skills, this course offers hands-on training to ensure you're prepared for any emergency in the field.
The course begins with a personal kit check and a discussion of your group’s goals. You’ll quickly move into learning rope techniques, including how to safely link up with your climbing partners to avoid crevasse falls. This section is focused on roping up properly and maintaining the correct distances between climbers.
After that, you’ll be introduced to the crevasse rescue kit, where we will walk through the components and show you when and why to use each item. The Z-pulley system, one of the most critical rescue techniques, will be demonstrated and practised. You’ll be guided through a dry run to break down the steps for lifting a fallen climber and gain confidence in the process.
As the day progresses, you will participate in practical training scenarios that simulate crevasse accidents, giving you the experience needed to react quickly and efficiently in a real emergency. If conditions allow, we will finish with a live simulation to fully integrate everything you’ve learned.
We also usually run this with a half days 'fixed lining' course to make a full day out of it. This covers fixed lining for high altitude peaks. All equipment provided.
The course takes place in controlled training areas that mirror the conditions you’ll encounter in glacier environments, without the need for snow.
The location is carefully chosen to maximise learning and ensure safety while allowing you to focus on the techniques in a more comfortable setting. Whether you’re learning on dry land or in snowy conditions, we’ll ensure the site provides an effective experience.
This course is suitable for all levels, including beginners. While no prior crevasse rescue experience is required, a basic understanding of rope work will be helpful.
The techniques are broken down into easy-to-follow steps, so even if you’re new to mountaineering, you’ll be able to pick up the skills quickly. If you’re unsure about anything, feel free to reach out before booking.
With over 20 years of mountaineering experience, our instructor brings a wealth of practical knowledge and passion to each course. Since transitioning to full-time guiding in 2017, the focus has always been on providing accessible, effective, and fun outdoor experiences. The emphasis is on safety and ensuring participants gain useful, applicable skills for their future adventures.
As a qualified Mountain Instructor and Winter Mountain Leader, the instructor is fully equipped to teach safe, practical techniques in real-world conditions. Having worked with top brands such as Patagonia and Black Diamond, the knowledge of the best equipment for your safety is always a priority. This course is not only about learning but also about building confidence, so you leave feeling ready for your next mountain adventure.
The course is available in both half-day and full-day formats, depending on your preference and availability.
For the half-day option, you’ll spend either the morning or afternoon practising techniques, while the full day allows for a more thorough exploration of crevasse rescue methods and the opportunity for additional hands-on training.
To book a half day, please contact us via the adventuro chat below.
No, snow is not required for this course to take place. In fact, we find that practising the techniques on dry land often leads to better learning outcomes, as it eliminates issues like cold and fatigue that can arise in snowy conditions.
We’ll explain how the skills transfer to snowy terrain, so you’ll still get a solid understanding of crevasse rescue.

A micro Traxion and any other personal climbing kit is useful.
That’s not a problem! The course is designed to be accessible for all skill levels, from complete beginners to more experienced climbers.
We break down all techniques into simple steps, so there’s no need to worry if you’re new to rope work. We use tried-and-tested methods to ensure that everyone can follow along and learn at their own pace.
The course is run in small groups of 1-4 people, ensuring you receive plenty of one-on-one attention and guidance.
This small group size also enhances safety and ensures that everyone can actively participate in the training exercises.

Had the benefit of having Paul to myself for this Hike up Helvellyn on Sun 12/10/25 on a on to one. Paul was welcoming, and very personable / friendly. He provided plenty of advice from walking & breathing techniques & walking with poles. Paul showed a lot of patience with…
Our time outdoor climbing with Paul was great! It was our first time trad climbing and also doing a multi-pitch climb.
