



Seeing Brighton from the water offers a completely different feel to the coastline, with open views, steady rhythm, and space to slow things down. This relaxed sea kayaking session is designed for first-timers and curious paddlers who want to build confidence while exploring beyond the busy seafront. With expert guidance throughout, it’s an enjoyable way to learn new skills and spend time on the water.
Your session begins at Brighton Marina, where you’ll meet your instructor and get fitted with the correct kayak, paddle, and buoyancy aid. Time is taken on dry land to explain how everything works before heading onto the water, keeping the start relaxed and unpressured. Once afloat, you’ll practise basic paddling techniques close to shore, learning how to move efficiently, steer smoothly, and keep your kayak travelling in a straight line.
After everyone feels comfortable, the group paddles east along a quieter stretch of coastline, leaving the main seafront behind. This section offers a calmer environment and a chance to settle into a steady pace while enjoying views of the chalk cliffs towards Ovingdean and Rottingdean. Instructors stay nearby at all times, offering tips, corrections, and encouragement so you can build control without feeling rushed.
Towards the end of the session, there’s the option to try a capsize drill. This isn’t compulsory, but many people enjoy the chance to learn how to safely get back into a kayak after tipping in. It’s a confidence-building exercise that often leaves paddlers feeling more capable and ready to progress into further kayaking sessions.
Launching from Brighton Marina provides a practical and scenic starting point, with sheltered water for learning before heading along the open coastline. The marina layout allows for an easy introduction before moving further afield.
Heading east takes you away from heavy boat traffic and busy beaches, offering a quieter paddle beneath the chalk cliffs and along a less crowded section of the Sussex coast.
No previous kayaking experience is required, making this session suitable for complete beginners as well as those looking to refresh basic skills. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, as you’ll be paddling continuously for periods of time.
You should also be comfortable in the water and able to swim at least 50 metres. Sea conditions are always assessed carefully, and if conditions are unsuitable, the session may take place in sheltered water within the marina.
