Early days establish and extend core winter skills before the week pushes into more demanding ground, snowpack assessment and emergency procedures. The opening days overlap the two-day introduction before the syllabus advances into longer routes, poorer visibility work and harder decision making on the hill.
You need strong fitness for five consecutive mountain days, local accommodation for four nights, and your own transport to daily meeting points. A full kit list arrives after booking; plan flexible lodging until the course is confirmed because winter conditions can shift venues at short notice.
Imagine five consecutive days on Scottish winter hills with the same small team and leader, moving from foundation skills toward avalanche awareness, harder ground and introductory emergency rope work that shorter courses rarely have time to teach properly. Groups stay at three to six people based from Fort William or Aviemore, with daily venues chosen for conditions and how the group is progressing. You leave with skills that have been repeated on real snow and ice rather than rushed through in a single weekend.
Early days establish crampon work, axe skills, arrest practice and winter navigation on accessible terrain, overlapping the two-day introduction before the syllabus pushes into longer routes and more demanding decision making. Midweek journeys integrate poor-visibility strategies, snowpack observation and efficient movement while your instructor keeps the group within terrain that matches ability and fatigue levels across consecutive days.
The final day adds emergency rope techniques and brings the week together with an honest debrief on progress, gaps to work on and sensible next steps for independent winter travel or further qualifications. You need local accommodation for four nights and your own transport to daily meeting points, with briefings each morning driven by weather and avalanche information.
Courses use hills and glens around Fort William and Ben Nevis, or the Cairngorms from Aviemore, with venues chosen daily for conditions and group progression. Both areas offer classic Highland winter scenery and reliable access to training terrain when the weather allows safe travel.
Roadheads and car parks vary with the plan each morning, so flexible travel arrangements help when the group moves between venues to match snowpack, wind and visibility. Your guide explains these decisions each day so you learn route planning as well as technique.
Good fitness for five consecutive mountain days is essential. Prior winter skills training is not required but summer hill experience in challenging conditions helps you absorb the week without fatigue limiting learning on later days.
Bring B2 boots, crampons, waterproofs and personal kit from the shared kit list. Local hire shops stock winter boots if you do not own suitable footwear.
Five days provide time for skills to stick and for your guide to coach nuance that short courses skip, with daily feedback tailored to how you learn on the hill rather than a single rushed block. Emergency rope work on the final day adds depth beyond standard introductions.
The instruction team has run outdoor courses since 2005 and also supports television and film productions with professional safety cover, bringing experienced, calm leadership to demanding Scottish winter weeks.
Five days provide time for skills to stick and for your guide to coach nuance that short courses skip, with daily feedback tailored to how you learn on the hill rather than a single rushed weekend.
Emergency rope work on the final day adds depth beyond standard introductions, giving a fuller picture of winter safety and rescue awareness than a two-day course can realistically cover.
Your guide confirms meeting locations before the course and may adjust roadheads daily as conditions change between Fort William and Aviemore venues. Book flexible accommodation for four nights locally and avoid non-refundable travel until the course is confirmed running.
Arrive prepared for early starts and late finishes on some days, with food and spare layers packed for full days away from facilities near the hill.
Five full days on mountain terrain demand strong stamina and recovery between days. Regular hillwalking preparation in the months before the course helps you get the most from the week without fatigue limiting learning.
If unsure, speak to the team in advance so they can advise honestly about readiness for consecutive winter days on Scottish hills.
No. The first two days cover similar ground to the two-day introduction before the syllabus advances into harder techniques and longer routes later in the week.
Returning students often appreciate the extra repetition before demanding ground appears, while beginners benefit from the gradual build across the opening days.
Accommodation is not included. Plan four nights locally near Fort William or Aviemore, staying close enough for early morning meeting times each day.
Flexible lodging helps when winter conditions shift venues at short notice while keeping the syllabus on track.
Helmet and ice axe are provided for all five days. These are checked and fitted at the roadhead so you know how to carry and use them safely throughout the week.
You bring boots, crampons, clothing, food and personal kit from the shared list. Local hire shops stock winter boots if you do not own B2 footwear.
Daily plans flex with conditions; severe weather may postpone activities or shift venues. Safety always comes first and your instructor explains decisions as the week progresses.
When the course cannot run as planned, rescheduling is arranged when possible rather than forcing unsuitable ground.
Yes. Emergency rope skills are covered on the final day, which shorter courses rarely include time to teach properly on the hill.
This is introductory rope work for winter emergencies, not a full climbing qualification, though it adds important tools for serious Scottish winter travel.
Groups are kept to three to six so coaching stays personal across the week and everyone gets meaningful practice time on each skill.
Larger groups would reduce hill time per person and make individual feedback harder to deliver on consecutive days.
Dates are offered from Fort William or Aviemore depending on the scheduled course. Your confirmation email states which base applies to your date.
Plan accommodation near the confirmed base for all four nights so travel to morning meeting points stays straightforward.
This is not a logged Quality Mountain Day for ML awards, though it is useful preparation if you are working towards winter qualifications or independent hill days.
Your instructor can suggest next formal training steps if that is your longer-term goal after the week.
The guided day prioritises a single mountain journey with light coaching en route, while this week follows a structured syllabus with repeated practice and advancing terrain.
Many people try the guided walk first, then commit to two or five training days when they know they enjoy Scottish winter conditions.
