Improve your skills in the water with structured intermediate surf lessons designed to help you refine technique, build confidence, and progress to more advanced manoeuvres. With small group sizes, expert coaching, and quality equipment included, these sessions are a great step forward for anyone ready to take their surfing beyond the basics. Lessons combine clear instruction on land with plenty of practice time in the waves, making sure you leave with new skills and a better understanding of the surf.
Your session begins at the surf base next to The Esplanade Hotel, overlooking South Fistral Beach. Here you’ll meet your instructor, be fitted with a Quiksilver or Roxy wetsuit, and be matched with a surfboard suited to your ability. After a short safety brief and assessment of conditions, the lesson starts with surf-specific warm-ups and a recap of beach theory before heading into the water.
In the surf, your instructor will guide you through intermediate-level techniques, including turtle rolls, duck dives, functional stance, and timing. You’ll work on linking manoeuvres, improving positioning in the line-up, and understanding priority rules to maximise your wave count. Each lesson is tailored to your progress, with instructors offering personalised feedback to sharpen your technique.
By the end of the session, you’ll have practised generating speed, making cleaner turns, and linking moves together with greater flow. With consistent coaching and a focus on safe progression, these lessons provide a solid foundation to confidently surf bigger, cleaner waves.
Lessons take place on South Fistral Beach in Newquay, a renowned surf spot that offers consistent conditions and a safe environment for progressing surfers. The beach has waves suitable for a variety of abilities, making it ideal for building confidence and refining technique at the intermediate level.
The surf base is located just steps from the sand, with access to indoor changing facilities, hot showers, and secure lockers. Free parking is available on Esplanade Road, making it easy to arrive and get straight into the water. With quality facilities on-site and two of Newquay’s top hotels next door, the location is both convenient and well-equipped for surf coaching.
To join an intermediate surf lesson, you should already feel comfortable paddling out back in waves over 2ft and be able to catch unbroken waves with a confident pop-up. These lessons are designed for surfers who want to refine their skills and start linking manoeuvres.
A reasonable level of fitness is expected as the sessions involve paddling, repeated attempts at wave catching, and some time spent negotiating white water. Participants must also be able to swim. Children under 10 should be accompanied by a parent during group lessons.
The centre is a Surfing England Centre of Excellence, offering high-quality facilities and expert tuition. Indoor changing rooms, hot showers, and lockers are provided free for all lesson participants, making your experience as comfortable as possible before and after time in the surf.
All instructors are fully qualified and experienced in teaching at different levels. Lessons use a combination of theory and practice to ensure you progress in both skill and confidence. Equipment is also top quality, with Quiksilver and Roxy wetsuits and a wide range of boards available. With bodyboards, stand up paddle boards, and surf hire also available, the centre provides everything you need to make the most of your time in the water.
These lessons are designed for people who already feel confident paddling out back in waves over 2ft and can catch unbroken waves with a solid pop-up. The coaching focuses on refining existing skills, improving board control, and introducing more advanced manoeuvres like linking turns and generating speed.
Unlike beginner lessons, these sessions go beyond standing up on white water waves. You’ll be coached on techniques such as turtle rolls and duck dives, positioning in the line-up, and reading surf conditions so you can surf bigger and cleaner waves with confidence.
Each session is 2 hours long, which allows enough time for a proper warm-up, a short beach theory section, and plenty of practice time in the water. Lessons are carefully structured to balance instruction with hands-on surfing experience.
Two hours also means you won’t become too tired to concentrate or perform well, which can happen with much longer sessions. The format keeps you engaged, focused, and able to make steady progress throughout the lesson.
All the essential surf equipment is included at no extra cost. This covers a surfboard appropriate for your ability level, along with a high-quality Quiksilver or Roxy wetsuit and any additional accessories like boots or gloves if needed.
The surfboards provided come in a range of sizes and shapes, so your instructor will match you with one that suits your height, weight, and ability. Having the right equipment makes a big difference when working on intermediate-level techniques.
Group sizes are kept small with a maximum of 5 participants per instructor. This ensures that everyone receives plenty of personal attention and feedback throughout the session.
Smaller groups also make it easier to adapt the lesson to each participant’s progress, whether you’re focusing on cutbacks, wave selection, or improving paddling technique. The limited numbers help keep the sessions supportive and effective.
The coaching focuses on helping you progress to the next level of surfing. You’ll work on turtle rolls or duck dives to get past breaking waves, improve your positioning in the line-up, and refine your pop-up into a stronger functional stance.
You’ll also practise turning, linking manoeuvres, cutbacks, and generating speed. A key part of the session includes understanding surf etiquette and wave priority so you can confidently surf in busier line-ups.
All of your surfing equipment is provided, but you’ll need to bring a towel, swimwear to wear under the wetsuit, and some warm clothing for afterwards. Sunscreen and a bottle of water are also recommended, especially on hot days.
If you want a snack or hot drink after your session, it’s worth bringing a little extra cash, as there are cafés and shops nearby. The centre provides secure lockers, so you can store your belongings safely while you surf.
