What to Expect

This surf school believes that your lesson starts from the moment you arrive! After a very warm welcome you can expect their team to check-in with your kids, see how they’re feeling, calm any nerves, and encourage the right mindset for the session ahead.

After this, they’ll be kitted out in wetsuits, paired up with boards, and head to the beach. Before heading into the water, there’s a short beach-based introduction covering safety, ocean awareness, the basics of surfing, and a warm-up. Moving to the ocean, the group stay in the shallows and practise paddling and catching small waves under close supervision.

Once they’re comfortable, they’ll progress to standing up on the board, with plenty of one-on-one coaching through this surf school’s unique “Focus Session” teaching method. “Focus Sessions” involve instructors spending 2-3 wave blocks with each participant, working with them on a particular skill or problem, which inevitably leads to a faster rate of progression.

Lessons take place at the beautiful Watergate Bay, just a short drive from Newquay. Well-known for its spacious soft sandy shoreline and consistent waves, it’s a local’s favourite and an incredible surf spot for beginners and experts alike.

With plenty of space in the water, gentle white-water waves for beginners, and soft-sand underfoot - it provides a safe and fun environment for kids to develop their skills.

Prerequisites

Children must be between 8-13 years old to join the session. No prior surfing experience is needed, but participants should be comfortable in the water and able to swim a short distance unaided.

If your child has any medical conditions or additional needs, please let the team know in advance so they can provide the best possible experience.

All lessons take place at Watergate Bay beach, just a minute’s drive from the surf school’s HQ in Newquay Bay Resort and around 10 minutes from Newquay town centre.

If conditions require a location change, the team will provide plenty of notice.

All participants need to arrive at the surf school 30 minutes before the lesson starts to allow time to change into a wetsuit.

During weekends, school holidays, and sunny days, extra time should be allowed for traffic and parking.

Yes, there are several parking options. The surf school is located on The Green, opposite Wax Beach Bar and next to the Council Car Park—Just Park Wallet may offer parking savings.

Additional parking is available opposite Watergate Bay Hotel and on the southern cliff overlooking the bay.

Arriving in a swimming costume and slip-on footwear is recommended to make changing into a wetsuit easier.

Participants should bring sun cream, water, a towel, a change of clothes, and £1 coins for showers if required.

The surf school can hold onto car keys, but there are no facilities for storing other belongings.

Valuables and clothes should be locked in a vehicle during the lesson.

Yes, surfing in the rain is encouraged! Rain often means better waves and you're going to get wet anyway...

Lessons only get cancelled if lifeguards red-flag the beach or if conditions are deemed unsafe. In such cases, lessons will be rescheduled or refunded.

Personal wetsuits can be used, but the team may recommend using one of theirs depending on the season and thickness of the suit.
