This six-day trip links a proper Toubkal ascent in the High Atlas with a camel camp night on Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga. Extra mountain days around Imlil help you acclimatise before the summit push to 4,167 metres. The second half crosses south to the Sahara for an evening camel trek and camp under the stars.
Extra days in Berber villages around Imlil build toward the refuge night and Toubkal summit at 4,167 metres, with mule-supported paths and guesthouse meals between walking stages. Your mountain guide chooses daily loops that match fitness and weather, with tea stops in villages where terraced fields and walnut groves frame the valley views.
After descending from the massif you transfer east through gorges to Merzouga for a sunset camel ride into camp on Erg Chebbi. Sunrise on the dunes and the return to Marrakech close the trip, with the six-day pace reducing altitude rush and adding valley culture before the desert contrast.
The trek covers Imlil, Toubkal massif and Erg Chebbi in one arc from Marrakech, from High Atlas summit country to the great sand lines of south-east Morocco. Village guesthouses and the mountain refuge precede hotel and camp nights on the Sahara leg, so accommodation style shifts with terrain.
Aremd and neighbouring valleys show Berber life on the mule paths, while Merzouga opens into rolling dunes that glow at dawn and dusk. You experience Morocco's vertical geography from terraced valleys above 2,000 metres to sea-level sand in one continuous journey.
Solid multi-day hiking fitness is required for Toubkal plus tolerance for long transfers and desert camping. Tell us your trekking history when you enquire so we match village day lengths to your group.
Technical climbing skills are not needed in normal dry conditions. Share any altitude concerns when you enquire so we build enough acclimatisation days before the refuge night.
Extra mountain days improve summit comfort and enjoyment by building altitude gradually in Berber villages before the refuge night. You arrive at 3,200 metres with steadier legs than on a two-day ascent.
We link mountain guides, drivers and camp teams under one itinerary so logistics stay coherent across both environments. One point of contact coordinates handovers from the Atlas to the Sahara without you re-explaining plans.
Pickup in Marrakech starts the drive through Asni to Imlil. You leave the vehicle and walk the Mizane Valley through Aremd and Sidi Chamharouch, then climb the mule track to the Toubkal refuge at 3,206 metres.
Expect about five hours of walking. Night one is at the refuge.
An early start takes you across the stream and up the scree toward the summit of Jebel Toubkal at 4,167 metres. From the plateau you look north to the Marrakech plain and south toward the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara.
You retrace the path to Imlil for the night. The altitude and loose rock make this the hardest day of the week.
Pickup in Imlil is around 8am. You cross Tizi n'Tichka, with the option to stop at the Ouarzazate film studios or take a short walk, then continue toward the Dades and the Valley of Roses.
Night three is in a hotel in the roses valley, with time for a gorge walk or a quieter evening if the group prefers.
After breakfast you drive to Todra Gorges for a walk in the palmery if the group wants it, then continue to Merzouga. In the late afternoon you ride camels for about an hour and a half to camp.
Dinner and night four are in the desert camp, with sunset on the dunes before you sleep.
Sunrise on the dunes, then the camel ride back to the kasbah for breakfast. The drive west takes you to Ait Benhaddou, the fortified ksar used in many films, with time to walk the lanes with your guide.
Night five is in a hotel close to Ait Benhaddou.
You travel the Ounila Valley to Telouet, a crumbling kasbah that once sat on the caravan road, then continue to Marrakech.
Drop-off is at your hotel or a point you agree in advance, usually in the late afternoon.
You'll be collected from your hotel or riad in Marrakech on the morning of day one. The drive runs through Asni to Imlil, where you leave the vehicle and start the walk to the refuge.
Day six finishes at Telouet and then Marrakech. Share your hotel name when you enquire so pickup and drop-off are straightforward.
Night one is at the Toubkal refuge at 3,206 metres. Night two is in Imlil after the summit. Night three is in a hotel in the Valley of Roses.
Night four is in a Merzouga desert camp after the camel ride. Night five is in a hotel near Ait Benhaddou. The refuge and camp are simple, so bring a warm layer for both.
Pickup is at your Marrakech hotel on day one for the drive to Imlil.
You return to Marrakech after Merzouga, usually on day six evening. Share your hotel, riad or port arrival details when you enquire and we confirm pickup time the day before travel, including the nearest vehicle access on narrow medina lanes.
The extra mountain days let you acclimatise in Berber villages before the refuge night and summit push. You arrive at the desert with steadier legs and better sleep behind you.
That slower build suits anyone who wants the summit without rushing straight from Imlil onto a long drive east.
Village guesthouses, Toubkal Refuge, road hotels and one Erg Chebbi camp night.
Bring a sleeping bag for the refuge. Camp provides tents. Hotel nights are in private rooms for your group, while desert camp is simple shared tents with mattresses and blankets under the stars.
Mountain and desert meals on the itinerary are included.
Tell us about dietary needs when you enquire. Drinks are not included. Breakfast and dinner are usually included where the itinerary lists hotel or camp nights, with lunch often on the road at a café or picnic stop between driving legs.
Full trekking kit for the Atlas plus desert sun protection and warm camp layers.
Use a daypack for summit day and pack a smaller bag for the camel night. Keep a refillable water bottle and any daily essentials in the bag you carry in the vehicle, and ask when you enquire if you want seasonal advice for Atlas cold or desert heat.
Multi-day walking at altitude plus long drives and camping require good endurance.
Share recent hikes when you enquire. Tell us about mobility or fitness concerns when you enquire and your guide adjusts gorge walks, medina time and driving breaks around the group rather than a rigid schedule.
Older experienced hikers may join. Young children struggle with the combined length.
We advise per family when you enquire. Share children's ages and how they handle long travel days when you enquire, and we advise honestly on pacing, seat comfort and whether a longer itinerary would suit your family better.
Mountain weather may shift summit timing. Desert wind may adjust camel plans.
Built-in extra days help recover schedule without dropping the desert leg. Winter snow can slow High Atlas passes and desert wind may shift camel timing, so we adjust for safety and keep you informed rather than pushing a fixed timetable.
Yes, acclimatisation days walk through Aremd and neighbouring valleys with guesthouse nights.
Your guide shares local culture during tea stops and village paths. Your driver-guide builds these stops into the day around weather, light and group pace, and can extend or shorten time on site when you ask on the road.
Mules typically carry group kit to the refuge. Personal bag support can be arranged when you enquire.
Tell us when you enquire if you want mules for personal gear on village days. Your driver-guide builds these stops into the day around weather, light and group pace, and can extend or shorten time on site when you ask on the road.
