Leave Marrakech behind for four days in the Western High Atlas, linking hamlets above the Azzaden and Assif valleys on mule paths used by local farmers. Mountain days follow well-used trails through walnut groves, juniper woodland and high cols such as Tizi n’Taghrhourte and Tizi n Mzik, with nights in Berber gites where meals are shared and muleteers carry your main bag between stops.
Named passes open wide valley views before you descend toward Imlil for the road home, often passing springs, barley terraces and red clay villages that feel far from the medina. You finish with a clear picture of Berber mountain culture without needing a Toubkal summit push, and a waterfall detour at Azib Tamsoult on the final morning adds a cool shaded stop before the transfer north.
Berber guides pace each walking day around weather, group fitness and safe pass timings, while mule teams carry main bags so you can focus on the trail. Village stays keep you close to mountain communities rather than rushing through in a day.
Pickup, meals on the trek and guiding are organised as one package from Marrakech to final drop-off. Cooks prepare picnic lunches and evening tagines while you walk between gites with only a daypack.
An early transfer takes you from Marrakech to Imi Oughlad where you meet your guide and mule team. You climb on switchback paths through pine and cornfields toward Tiz N’Tachete with views into the Azzaden Valley.
A picnic near Imi N’Ifri breaks the day before you continue to Tiziane for your first gite night among red clay terraces. Walking time is typically 5 to 6 hours. Meals included: lunch and dinner.
Breakfast in the village sets you up for a steady walk along Assif N’Ait Oussaden through walnut groves toward Tizi n’Taghrhourte. The pass opens views across forested slopes and distant snow patches when conditions allow.
Lunch near Assaka Spring is followed by a forested descent to D’knt or Agouns n Assoul for dinner and a second guesthouse night. Walking time is typically 5 to 7 hours. Meals included: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The trail crosses barley terraces and climbs to Tizi n’Tagdalte before a picnic stop at a mountain spring. Afternoon paths wind down through juniper woodland toward Tizi Oussem.
You continue up to Tamsoult for camping or a gite depending on season. Walking time is typically 6 to 7 hours. Meals included: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
A morning detour to Azib Tamsoult waterfall adds a cool, shaded stop before you regain height toward Tizi n Mzik. Descend into Imlil where you collect any stored luggage and enjoy lunch.
Your driver meets you for the road back to Marrakech, usually arriving mid to late afternoon. Walking time is typically 5 to 6 hours in the morning. Meals included: breakfast and lunch.
Collection from your Marrakech hotel or riad starts the trek. Many properties sit on pedestrian lanes, so the driver parks nearby and meets you on foot. Same-day Menara Airport pickup can be arranged when your flight aligns with the tour start.
At the end of day 4 you are dropped at the nearest accessible point to your hotel or riad. If needed, the driver can coordinate with your accommodation so someone is ready to meet you.
Most trekking kit can be rented in Imlil if you prefer not to travel with full mountain gear.
Collection from your Marrakech hotel or riad starts the trek. Pedestrian medina lanes often mean a short walk to the vehicle.
On day four you are dropped at the nearest accessible point to your accommodation. Menara Airport pickup on day one is possible when your flight timing matches the tour start.
Expect four consecutive village walking days of roughly 5 to 7 hours on cols and descents. Moderate fitness and some prior trail experience make the week more enjoyable.
Berber guides set an unhurried pace with lunch and photo stops. Mention knee, hip or heart concerns before you confirm so we can plan rest stops honestly.
Berber gites host you on village nights with shared bathrooms and communal dinners. Bedding is simple; bring a liner if you like extra warmth.
Exact guesthouse names can change with season and group size while the village welcome and meal standard stay consistent.
Village cooks serve breakfast, picnic lunches and evening tagines while you trek between Azzaden and Assif hamlets.
Mint tea with meals is typical. Soft drinks and wine are not included unless you buy them in the village.
Pack animals haul shared cooking gear and one soft duffel per guest between gite stops.
Keep rain gear, snacks and valuables in the daypack you carry while walking. Mule loads are not accessible until you reach the overnight stop.
Broken-in boots, waterproofs, warm layers, a daypack, water bottle, sunglasses, sunscreen and a soft mule bag cover village trekking needs.
A head torch helps on early starts or dim gite corridors. Imlil rental shops can supply much of the mountain kit if you prefer.
Insurance is not sold with the trek; buy cover that includes multi-day hiking on mountain footpaths.
Check evacuation and medical benefits for remote valley walking, and share relevant health conditions with your guide before day one.
Solo hikers and private parties are both welcome. Per-person rates change with group size on the booking tiers shown when you enquire.
Ask for a dedicated guide and date when you want a departure only for your group. We confirm pricing and availability for private Berber village loops as soon as we can.
Rain on forested cols or wind on exposed ridges can slow progress; leaders may reorder passes for safety.
An extra village night or an easier valley day is sometimes the right call before continuing. We discuss options with you rather than pushing on in unsafe conditions.
A week’s notice helps secure gite space, cooks and mule teams for this four-day loop.
Peak season dates go first. Send your preferred window early and we will confirm availability or suggest nearby alternatives.
We partner with Rewilding Britain to help protect our natural spaces for future adventures.
