3-Day Aguelzim Pass and Toubkal Ascent Trek

This trek uses the Aguelzim Pass rather than the standard Sidi Chamarouch approach on the way up, giving two full days of high-mountain walking and acclimatisation before the summit attempt, then descends via Sidi Chamarouch on the final day.

The route is a good middle ground between the fast 3-day express route and the standard 4-day ascent.

Two nights are spent at altitude in mountain refuges or camps before the summit attempt, with day two crossing the 3,600 metre Aguelzim Pass, which helps the body adjust before the push to 4,167 metres on day three.

This spread-out ascent generally makes summit day feel more manageable than a faster, more direct route.

Summit day is the longest of the trek at 8 to 9 hours, with around 1,000 metres of ascent to the top followed by a full 2,400 metre descent to Imlil, so a good level of fitness is important.

No technical climbing is required, but the combination of altitude and distance makes it the most demanding day of the trip.

Yes, mules carry the main luggage between camps, so you only need a daypack with water, layers and personal essentials during the walking sections.

This applies across all three days of the trek.

The pass offers wide views across the Haouz Plain and towards Mount Toubkal itself, making it one of the scenic highlights of the route on day two, alongside the Ighouliden waterfalls passed earlier in the trek.

It's considered one of the more dramatic viewpoints on any of our Toubkal routes.

The first two nights are spent in a mountain refuge or camp near Azib Tamssoult and at the Toubkal Refuge, both simple accommodation used by trekkers preparing for the summit.

Facilities are basic mountain-hut standard rather than hotel comfort, in keeping with the remote setting.

The minimum age is 10, though the sustained walking days suit older, active children and adults best given the altitude and distance involved.

Group sizes range up to 20 people, and private departures can be arranged on request.

Sturdy broken-in trekking boots, warm layers for cold refuge nights, waterproof and windproof outer layers, and a head torch are essential, along with trekking poles recommended for the long descent.

Sun protection and a reusable water bottle round out the essential kit.

This trek is graded challenging, reaching 4,167 metres with a demanding second day crossing the Aguelzim Pass, so good fitness and previous hillwalking experience are recommended.
