Travelling from Marrakech into the vast landscapes of southern Morocco, this 3-day desert adventure combines mountain passes, historic kasbahs, and the rolling dunes of Merzouga. Along the way, experience cultural highlights, scenic drives, and authentic moments that bring Morocco’s heritage to life. Each day blends discovery with relaxation, ensuring a memorable escape into the desert.
Your adventure begins as you leave Marrakech, crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Along the way, enjoy dramatic mountain scenery, traditional Berber villages, and lush valleys. The first major stop is Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can explore ancient mud-brick buildings and winding streets while learning about Morocco’s history. The day continues through the Dades Valley, often called the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs,” before ending with a Moroccan dinner and an overnight stay at a local riad or hotel.
Day two starts with a scenic drive through the Todra Gorge, a dramatic canyon offering remarkable photo opportunities. Afterward, travel to Merzouga, where you’ll embark on a camel trek across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi at sunset. The evening is spent at a traditional Berber camp, enjoying local cuisine, live music, and storytelling under a star-filled sky, providing a true sense of desert life.
On the final day, return to Marrakech via Ouarzazate, known as Morocco’s “Hollywood.” Stop to visit Atlas Film Studios or the Taourirt Kasbah, then continue through the High Atlas Mountains, reflecting on your journey as you travel back to the city. This final stretch allows for scenic views and a relaxed conclusion to your immersive 3-day adventure.
The tour begins in Marrakech, a bustling city renowned for its markets, palaces, and vibrant culture. From here, travel southeast into the High Atlas Mountains, enjoying dramatic landscapes and traditional Berber villages. The journey then leads to the Dades Valley, famous for its kasbahs and palm groves, before reaching the Sahara Desert in Merzouga, where the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi provide an iconic Moroccan backdrop.
Merzouga offers a unique desert environment with vast sand dunes and traditional Berber culture. The route back to Marrakech passes through Ouarzazate, providing insight into Moroccan cinema and history, before returning to the city via scenic mountain roads. The combination of mountains, valleys, and desert makes this an ideal way to experience Morocco’s diverse landscapes.
Accommodation on this tour is designed to offer comfort and authentic Moroccan hospitality. Your first night is spent in the Dades Valley, where a traditional riad or hotel awaits. Here you can relax with a Moroccan dinner, enjoy warm hospitality, and rest in a comfortable room surrounded by the beauty of the valley.
The second night takes you into the heart of the Sahara Desert. In Merzouga, you will stay in a traditional Berber camp, complete with tents set against the backdrop of the Erg Chebbi dunes. On the first night, you will stay in the Dades Valley at a traditional riad or hotel, which includes a private room, bathroom facilities, and a Moroccan dinner. These properties are comfortable, family-run, and allow you to experience genuine hospitality in a scenic setting.
The second night is spent in Merzouga at a Berber desert camp, where you will sleep in traditional tents designed for comfort and warmth. Here, you’ll enjoy dinner, music, and the chance to admire the night sky in a unique desert environment.
The camel ride usually lasts between one and two hours, depending on the pace of the group and the conditions on the dunes. The trek is designed to be enjoyable rather than physically challenging, giving plenty of time to take in the changing colours of the desert at sunset.
Camels are led by experienced handlers who ensure the safety and comfort of participants. You’ll stop at points along the way for photos and to enjoy the view, making it a highlight of the entire experience.
Dinner is provided on both nights, along with breakfast at the desert camp in Merzouga. These meals are prepared with local ingredients and showcase traditional Moroccan flavours, giving you a taste of authentic regional cuisine.
Lunches are not included so you have the flexibility to choose restaurants or cafes along the way. Guides can recommend good places to eat in each location, often offering a choice of local favourites and international options.
It is recommended to pack comfortable walking shoes, lightweight clothing for daytime, and warmer layers for evenings in the desert. A sunhat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential, as the desert sun can be strong even in cooler months.
You may also want to bring a small backpack for daily essentials, a reusable water bottle, and a camera to capture the scenery. For overnight in the desert, most camps provide blankets, but bringing an extra layer can make your stay more comfortable.

The highlight of our trip to Morocco was the two days we spent in the Atlas Mountains, organised by Mohamed Adventuro, we left Marrakech unaware of just how beautiful and friendly this part of the world would be. Two days hiking around the mountains in the shadow of Mount Toubkal,…
The actual trip was fantastic overall- Rachid picked me up as planned and we went up to Imlil. However, the route was not as described in the Adventuro listing and was hard work (745 metres ascent total in 12.5km, the last 5km being about 500m ascent all uphill) not a…
My friend and I had an amazing time on our guided trail run in the Atlas Mountains. Our guide was the local 10km trail champion and he adjusted to the distance and pace we wanted to run, taking us on a beautiful trail through the mountains and villages. A delicious…
