Designed for qualified surf coaches needing to refresh and renew their in-date SLSGB Surf Coach Safety or Rescue award, this two-day programme combines refresher training with formal reassessment. Covering rescue procedures, first aid, surf safety and operational coaching updates, the course ensures candidates remain current, capable and confident within professional surf coaching environments.
The programme begins at the harbour training base with refresher sessions covering current SLSGB procedures, protocol updates and rescue standards. Throughout the first day, candidates revisit practical rescue skills, first aid procedures and operational coaching responsibilities through a combination of classroom learning and practical ocean sessions. Instructors provide guidance and coaching while helping candidates prepare for the formal assessment phase.
Practical sessions take place across beaches around Newquay depending on the conditions and course requirements. Candidates complete rescue drills, casualty management exercises, board and tube rescues, spinal injury procedures and resuscitation scenarios within realistic surf environments. The refresher also revisits profiling, environmental awareness, control and command systems and working alongside emergency services during coastal incidents.
The second day focuses more heavily on assessment and reassessment activities, including timed fitness tests, swim standards and practical rescue evaluations. Candidates may choose either the Surf Coach Safety or Surf Coach Rescue pathway depending on the remit required for their coaching role. The Safety pathway covers ankle to waist-deep teaching environments, while the Rescue pathway allows coaches to operate further into the surf zone with rescue capability beyond the break.
Training operates from Newquay Harbour with practical sessions delivered across a range of local beaches depending on swell, tides and weather conditions. The varied coastline allows instructors to select suitable environments for both refresher training and practical assessment elements.
Sheltered harbour areas provide controlled locations for certain coaching and rescue exercises, while nearby surf beaches create realistic operational training conditions throughout the course.
Candidates must hold valid SLSGB membership and possess an in-date SLSGB Surf Coach Safety and Rescue award, SLSGB Surf Coach Safety award or SLSGB Surf Coach Rescue award before attending the refresher course.
For the Safety pathway, candidates must swim 200 metres continuously in under 5 minutes and run 200 metres in under one minute. For the Rescue pathway, candidates must swim 400 metres in under 8 minutes alongside the same 200 metre run requirement.
Using extensive experience across surf coaching, lifeguarding and coastal rescue training, the instructor team delivers realistic refresher training designed around current SLSGB operational standards. Candidates benefit from practical coaching within genuine surf conditions while revisiting the rescue techniques and safety systems expected within professional surf instruction environments.
Mel helps candidates prepare ahead of the course while the wider training team brings years of operational rescue and watersports instruction experience into every session. Operating directly from Newquay Harbour also provides excellent facilities including classrooms, changing areas, equipment storage and quick access to multiple training beaches.
