This two-day trek escapes Marrakech for the heart of the High Atlas, starting in Imlil and climbing through walnut groves and terraced fields to Tizi Mzik Pass before descending to the Ighouliden Waterfalls and Tamsoult Refuge. Day two continues through the picturesque Azzaden Valley, crossing Tizi Oudid Pass and passing Berber villages before returning to Marrakech.
Daily walking is around four to five hours with a local mountain guide setting a steady pace. Mule support carries your main luggage, so you walk with only a daypack while enjoying some of the most scenic trails in the Imlil region without committing to a longer expedition.
These routes are walked year round by guides who grew up in the Imlil valley and know every path, village and viewpoint along the way. Groups are kept small so the pace stays comfortable and you have time to share tea with local families as you go.
From hotel pickup in Marrakech to the final drop-off on day two, transport, guiding, refuge accommodation, meals and mule support are all arranged so you can focus on the trail and the landscape.
You will be collected from your hotel or riad in Marrakech on the morning of day one, usually around 08:00. Please share your accommodation details when you book so the driver can find you easily.
The drive to Imlil takes around one to one and a half hours depending on traffic. On day two you return the same way after finishing the trek in the afternoon.
You spend one night at Tamsoult Refuge, a mountain lodge set in a quiet valley beneath the High Atlas peaks. Rooms are simple and communal, with shared bathroom facilities and a warm dining area where hearty evening meals are served.
The refuge places you right on the trail with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and easy access to the Ighouliden Waterfalls. Bedding is provided; bring a towel and any personal comfort items for dormitory-style accommodation.
You should be comfortable walking for four to five hours a day on mountain paths with some steep sections. Prior hill walking helps, but you do not need technical climbing skills.
The highest point is Tizi Mzik at 2,489 metres. A steady pace and good hydration make the ascents much more enjoyable.
The trail reaches Tizi Mzik Pass at 2,489 metres on day one and Tizi Oudid at around 2,200 metres on day two. You start near Imlil at about 1,740 metres.
Altitude is moderate compared with Toubkal routes, but evenings at the refuge can still feel cool. Walk steadily and drink plenty of water.
You spend one night at Tamsoult Refuge, a mountain lodge in a peaceful valley setting surrounded by peaks and waterfalls. Rooms are simple dormitory or shared style with basic mountain facilities.
Bedding is provided at the refuge. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper and a warm layer for cold evenings.
All meals are included from arrival in Imlil on day one through to lunch on day two before your return to Marrakech. Expect hearty breakfasts, picnic lunches on the trail and tagines or couscous at the refuge.
Tell the team about dietary requirements when you book so meals can be planned ahead.
No. A mule carries your main luggage between Imlil and the refuge while you walk with a daypack containing water, spare layers and personal items.
Pack light for the trail and leave bulky suitcases at your Marrakech accommodation if possible.
Sturdy broken-in hiking boots are essential, along with breathable layers, a waterproof jacket, hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Even in summer, evenings at the refuge can be cool, so pack a warm fleece.
A reusable water bottle, head torch and personal medication should also be in your daypack. Trekking poles are optional but helpful on long descents.
Solo travellers are welcome and often join small groups. Because this is a request booking, the team will confirm dates and group composition with you before your trip is finalised.
Refuge rooms may be shared with other trekkers of the same gender unless you have booked a private arrangement in advance.
Mountain weather can change quickly. Your guide monitors conditions and may adjust the route or pace if safety requires it. Treks run year round, with the most stable weather typically from April to June and September to November.
If conditions are poor, the guide will choose a safer alternative rather than pushing on regardless.
On the morning of day one, a driver collects you from your hotel or riad in Marrakech at an agreed time, usually around 08:00. Share your accommodation name and address when you book so the driver can find you easily.
On day two, the same service brings you back to Marrakech from Imlil after the trek, typically in the afternoon.
Guides are local to the Imlil and Azzaden valleys and know these trails through every season. They set a comfortable pace, navigate the route and share knowledge of Berber village life along the way.
English and French are commonly spoken on the trail. Guides carry basic first aid supplies and know the nearest evacuation routes if needed.
About the centre
Marrakech
Based in Imlil in the High Atlas, this team specialises in guided mountain treks, day hikes and desert combinations that start with an easy pickup from Marrakech. Routes take in Berber villages, high passes and classic summits such as Toubkal, with local guides who know the trails and the pace that suits each group.
Days are built around real mountain walking and warm hospitality - shared meals, clear briefings and support on the trail - so travellers can focus on the landscape and culture rather than logistics. Whether it is a full-day summit hike or a multi-day trek with overnight stays in the mountains, the aim is a well-organised, authentic Moroccan adventure.
