Kayaking gets you onto water that footpaths never reach, from calm lakes to proper white water. Easy to start, hard to put down.

Overview

A kayak is about the simplest way to explore water under your own steam. On a calm lake or gentle river you will be paddling happily within minutes. The strokes are easy to pick up, and most of the early skill is just learning to relax and let the boat do its thing.

From there it branches out. Sea kayaking takes you along coastlines, into caves and out to islands. White water is the lively end, reading rapids and picking lines. Touring kayaks carry kit for multi-day trips. There is a flavour for every mood.
