This one day RYA course provides skills in understanding the radar screen and interpreting the display for collision avoidance and navigation. Modern radar is an invaluable tool for the leisure boater, but is only useful in the hands of a knowledgeable operator, and is potentially dangerous if used when unfamiliar with its strengths and weaknesses. Practical sessions include using the screen controls, plotting targets and navigational techniques, using software simulators and real radar equipment onboard a vessel when practical.
The RYA Radar course syllabus is taught in a ratio of (12:1) students to instructor and covers the following:
The course is held at our training centre in Menai Bridge on the Isle of Anglesey, with a fully equipped classroom and the boats a five-minute walk away when the day includes time on the water. Menai Bridge offers generally sheltered waters, with the Strait close enough for a proper radar picture.
They say if you can navigate the Menai Strait then it sets you in good stead for any navigational boating challenge. The classroom is in the town itself, easily reached by taking junction 8A onto the A5 off the A55 at Britannia Bridge, with Pay and Display parking across the road.
No previous radar or navigation experience is required. The day starts from the fundamentals, so it suits anyone with a radar on board or anyone who intends to use one.
A little chartwork helps, but it is not essential. Come ready for a full classroom day, and for time on the water if the session includes afloat exercises. Wear warm layers and non-slip footwear if you may go afloat.
What makes a Seawake Powerboat Training course different is our team. We are all enthusiastic powerboaters with a vast amount of experience on the water, and this radar day is taught by instructors who already run the powerboat and shore-based tickets from the same classroom.
Our instructors teach using RYA guidelines, their own experience and their local knowledge of the Menai Strait and North Wales coast. Theory is important, and the classroom sits a five-minute walk from the boats so the picture on the screen can be the same water you have just been looking at.
Classroom days are at 40 High Street, Menai Bridge, Isle of Anglesey, LL59 5EF.
Directions: Travelling westbound along the A55 (from the direction of Chester), just after the Britannia Bridge exit the A55 at junction 8A immediately after the bridge. Keep to the right on the slip road and follow signs for A5 Menai Bridge. As you come into Menai Bridge, take the 2nd exit from the roundabout (there is a Shell Petrol Station on the right). Proceed down to the town Square and bare right (follow signs for Beaumaris) on to the High Street. Our building is approx. 200m on the right, there is a car park 100m past on the left.
This day is for anyone who has radar on board, or who intends to use radar for navigation, on a motor or sailing vessel. It suits people who have never switched a set on, and people who already have one and want to read it properly.
Radar only helps if you understand its limits. The course is there so you can interpret the display, tell targets apart and fold the picture into a passage plan rather than staring at a screen you do not trust.
No. The day starts with how radar waves travel and the parts of the set, then builds to plotting and collision avoidance. You do not need a previous RYA ticket to attend.
A little chartwork helps when you start plotting range and bearing, but it is not required. The instructor works through the plots with you.
You cover radar wave travel, the components of a radar set, types of display, target definition and discrimination, and radar reflectors. You then work range, bearing and plotting techniques.
The day also looks at how radar sits with a chart and with collision avoidance, so the picture on the screen is something you can act on, not just watch.
Training is delivered in the classroom, and as a mix of classroom and afloat exercises when the day allows. The Menai Strait gives you a real picture to interpret when you go afloat.
Either way, the syllabus is the same. You leave knowing how the set works, where it has limits, and how to plot what you see.
The course is completed in a single day, typically around 6 to 8 hours depending on the group and whether you go afloat. It starts from the classroom at 40 High Street, Menai Bridge.
The day is split between the theory of the set and the practical plots. There is time for questions on the picture in front of you, not a race through slides.
There is no formal exam. You work through practical exercises and plotting scenarios so the instructor can see that you understand the principles.
Feedback runs through the day. The aim is that you can read the display, tell targets apart and use the picture for navigation and collision avoidance when you go back to your own boat.
Course materials, charts, plotting sheets and access to radar equipment are provided. You do not need to bring your own set.
A notebook and pen are enough. If the day includes time afloat, warm layers and non-slip footwear are useful.

Yes. The day is written so you can take the same principles back to the set on your own motor or sailing vessel. The Menai Strait picture is a useful one, because it mixes close targets with more open water.
You will still need to learn the buttons on your own display. The course teaches you what the picture means, not only which menu to open.
No. Radar is a tool that sits with a lookout, a chart and the collision regulations. The course spends time on the limits of the set so you do not treat a blank screen as an empty sea.
Used well, it helps with collision avoidance and navigation in poor visibility. Used without that understanding, it can give you a false sense of what is out there.
We had a fantastic time! The Skipper was brilliant and carefully tailored the experience to suit all the passengers needs. It was safe, exciting, interesting and a lot of fun. Thank you
The boattrip was amazing! We enjoyed every minute! Jason our captain told us a lot from the wildlife on Puffin Island. We really recommend this trip, it’s worth the money for sure.
Fantastic experience led by friendly, efficient and interesting people.
The instructor/guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable, and we had great fun on the boat
We loved our boat trip, water doughnuts and speeding along 50mph + was great fun. Our skipper was lovely, very knowledgeable and enthusiasm shone through. Want to come back and see the puffins next year... although this was my soul reason to book this trip it really did not disappoint…
The Rib Tour was amazing! Exhilarating ride on the rib combined with fascinating facts about the coastline and the birds on puffin island. Highly recommended, will be booking the bridges tour next.
Exhilarating but also really informative. A great experience all round and highly recommended
Brilliant! Loved when Jason put the RIB into ‘sports mode’. Perfect mix of adventure and information. Beautiful scenery, great morning in the water. Cheers guys.
What a great experience. Our skipper, Jason, was great. Good chat, very knowledgable and really pushed the boat. The boat is an impressive thing which really moves. Great experience! Will be back to do the other tour.
Excellent!
