Develop the shore-based knowledge to plan and manage long-distance ocean passages. This RYA Ocean Yachtmaster Theory course covers celestial navigation, passage planning, worldwide meteorology and the use of navigational instruments, preparing you for the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean practical exam or for longer offshore passages by sail or power.
The course begins with celestial navigation, taking meridian altitudes and other sights using a sextant, then working the sights so you can fix a position when there is no land in sight. You then move on to ocean passage planning: route plotting, tides and currents, fuel and provisions, and the meteorology that sits with a long passage.
Worldwide weather, synoptic charts and forecast data are used to decide when to go and when to wait. Scenario exercises pull the navigation, planning and weather together so you can see how the pieces sit on a real ocean voyage. The course is shore-based, in the Menai Bridge classroom or online, and ends with an assessment of the theory.
Classroom days are held at our training centre in Menai Bridge on the Isle of Anglesey, with a fully equipped classroom in the town itself. Online study uses the same syllabus, so you can complete the theory in the way that suits you.
They say if you can navigate the Menai Strait then it sets you in good stead for any navigational boating challenge. The classroom is easily reached by taking junction 8A onto the A5 off the A55 at Britannia Bridge, with Pay and Display parking across the road.
You should have completed the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Theory course, or hold equivalent knowledge. That is the base this course builds on, so chartwork, tides and coastal meteorology should already feel familiar before you pick up a sextant.
No previous ocean miles are required. A genuine interest in long-distance passages and a willingness to work through celestial calculations and weather plots will get you the most from the week. The minimum age on this listing is 17.
What makes a Seawake Powerboat Training course different is our team. We are all enthusiastic powerboaters with a vast amount of experience on the water, and this shore-based course is taught by instructors who already run the Yachtmaster Offshore Theory and powerboat tickets from the same classroom.
Our instructors teach using RYA guidelines, their own experience and their local knowledge of the Menai Strait and North Wales coast. Theory is important, and the classroom sits in Menai Bridge so the discipline of a proper plot is the same whether the next passage is the Strait or an ocean.
Classroom days are at 40 High Street, Menai Bridge, Isle of Anglesey, LL59 5EF. Take junction 8A onto the A5 off the A55 at Britannia Bridge. Pay and Display parking is across the road from the classroom.
This course is for anyone who has completed RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Theory, or holds equivalent knowledge, and wants the celestial navigation and ocean passage planning needed for the Yachtmaster Ocean practical exam or for longer offshore passages.
It is shore-based theory, so it suits both sailors and powerboaters who want to plan a passage when there is no land in sight, not only those who already have ocean miles.
No previous ocean miles are required. The course is shore-based and concentrates on celestial navigation, passage planning, worldwide meteorology and the use of navigational instruments.
You do need Yachtmaster Offshore Theory, or the same knowledge, so the week can stay on sextant sights and ocean weather rather than revisiting coastal chartwork.
You will take meridian altitudes and other celestial sights using a sextant, work the sights to a position, and plan ocean passages with tides, currents, fuel, provisions and worldwide weather in mind.
Meteorology covers global weather systems, synoptic charts and forecast data. You also cover the use and care of navigational instruments and the risk assessment that sits with a long-distance voyage.
The course is shore-based. You can take it in the classroom at 40 High Street, Menai Bridge, typically over five days, or study the same syllabus online.
Classroom days combine chart-table exercises, sight reduction and weather plots. Online study uses the same RYA Ocean theory, with the assessment at the end.
Yes. The course ends with an assessment of celestial navigation, passage planning and meteorology. Passing gives you the RYA Ocean Yachtmaster Theory certificate.
That certificate is the shore-based standard the Ocean practical exam expects. It does not itself make you a Yachtmaster Ocean.
The minimum age on this listing is 17. That sits with the maturity needed for celestial calculations and for planning a passage that may last many days.
You also need Yachtmaster Offshore Theory, or equivalent knowledge, before you start, so the age is only part of the picture.
Course materials, charts and plotting sheets are provided for the classroom and for the exercises. You do not need to bring your own sextant, though you may if you already own one and want to use it.
A notebook and pen are enough for classroom days. Online learners work through the same publications in digital or posted form.

Take junction 8A onto the A5 off the A55 at Britannia Bridge. The same classroom is used for Day Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Theory.
Yachtmaster Offshore Theory takes your navigation and meteorology to Coastal and Offshore exam standard. Ocean Theory is the next shore-based step, adding celestial navigation and worldwide weather for passages out of sight of land.
If you do not yet have Offshore Theory, start there. This course assumes that base so the hours can stay on the sextant and the ocean plot.
No. The theory is the same whether the boat has a keel or an engine. Seawake is a powerboat school, and the classroom examples often sit on the North Wales coast, but the RYA paper is Ocean Yachtmaster Theory for sail or power.
If you skipper a motor yacht or a RIB on longer passages, the celestial work and the weather plots are still the tools you need when GPS is not the only answer you want.

We had a fantastic time! The Skipper was brilliant and carefully tailored the experience to suit all the passengers needs. It was safe, exciting, interesting and a lot of fun. Thank you
The boattrip was amazing! We enjoyed every minute! Jason our captain told us a lot from the wildlife on Puffin Island. We really recommend this trip, it’s worth the money for sure.
Fantastic experience led by friendly, efficient and interesting people.
The instructor/guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable, and we had great fun on the boat
We loved our boat trip, water doughnuts and speeding along 50mph + was great fun. Our skipper was lovely, very knowledgeable and enthusiasm shone through. Want to come back and see the puffins next year... although this was my soul reason to book this trip it really did not disappoint…
The Rib Tour was amazing! Exhilarating ride on the rib combined with fascinating facts about the coastline and the birds on puffin island. Highly recommended, will be booking the bridges tour next.
Exhilarating but also really informative. A great experience all round and highly recommended
Brilliant! Loved when Jason put the RIB into ‘sports mode’. Perfect mix of adventure and information. Beautiful scenery, great morning in the water. Cheers guys.
What a great experience. Our skipper, Jason, was great. Good chat, very knowledgable and really pushed the boat. The boat is an impressive thing which really moves. Great experience! Will be back to do the other tour.
Excellent!
