This online RYA VHF course is ideal for anyone with a fixed or hand-held marine VHF radio. It teaches correct operational procedures, ensuring you communicate safely and effectively while avoiding interference with emergency transmissions. Completion provides the Short-Range Certificate, the minimum legal qualification required for VHF radios with Digital Selective Calling (DSC).
The course starts with an introduction to marine VHF radios, explaining their importance as a safety tool and how incorrect use can interfere with emergency communications. You will learn the distinction between routine, urgent, and distress calls and understand when and how to use each appropriately.
Interactive modules explore the use of DSC, enabling you to make calls to specific vessels safely. You will also study scenarios involving channel 16 use, emergency procedures, and the legal obligations for both new and older VHF equipment.
The final part of the course prepares you for the assessment, testing your understanding of all key principles. Passing the exam grants the RYA Short-Range Certificate, recognised internationally and essential for safely operating VHF radios on British vessels or when upgrading older equipment.
As this is an online course, you can study from anywhere with internet access. This flexibility allows you to learn at your own pace, fitting study around work, travel, or other commitments.
Full access to online resources and guidance ensures you can revisit content and clarify concepts as needed. You can complete the course entirely from home, without the need to attend a physical training centre.
No prior experience with VHF radios is required. The course is suitable for anyone who owns or intends to operate a VHF radio, including those upgrading older licences to meet current DSC standards.
You will need a computer or device with internet access and a quiet space to complete modules and assessments. Following instructions carefully and focusing on the scenarios ensures maximum benefit from the course.
This online RYA VHF course is structured to provide thorough knowledge of radio operation and DSC procedures, following RYA standards. The course prepares you for real-world situations, enhancing safety for yourself and others on board.
Support is available throughout, with clear instructions and interactive examples. Completing the course ensures you meet legal requirements, understand correct VHF etiquette, and can confidently use a marine radio in everyday and emergency situations.
