Take sailing to the next stage with structured racing sessions designed for confident young sailors ready to experience competitive sailing. Over two days, the course introduces fundamental racing skills, including starts, mark rounding, and basic tactical decision-making, all within a supportive and well-managed environment. Time on the water is maximised, giving young sailors practical experience in applying what they learn immediately.
Sessions begin with on-shore briefings covering basic racing rules, starting sequences, and course layouts. Instructors explain the objectives and key techniques, ensuring sailors understand what is expected before entering the water. Rigging support is available where needed to ensure boats are prepared correctly.
Once on the water, coaching focuses on applying these concepts in real conditions. Sailors practise starts, work on mark rounding, and learn how to make tactical decisions while racing alongside peers. Instructors offer feedback and guidance to help refine technique and encourage independent thinking.
Later in the course, sailors put together full race sequences, combining all skills learned to navigate courses effectively. The focus remains on confidence and understanding, helping young sailors feel prepared to take part in regular club racing or Youth Race Club sessions. By the end of the two days, skills are consolidated, and each sailor gains a solid foundation in racing fundamentals.
The course takes place on a sheltered inland reservoir near Forest Row in East Sussex, providing safe and suitable conditions for first-time racing. Designated racing zones and launch areas allow sessions to run smoothly while giving space for manoeuvres and tactical practice.
The surrounding environment is peaceful and well-managed, helping young sailors focus on skill development. Shore-based areas allow parents to observe without interfering, and the calm setting supports learning under safe, controlled conditions.
Your child should have successfully completed Youth Sailing Stage 3 or demonstrate equivalent sailing ability. Confidence on the water, independent boat handling, and familiarity with basic tacking and manoeuvres are essential to get the most out of the course.
Clothing suitable for getting wet is required, alongside secure footwear. Arriving early allows time for rigging and briefing, ensuring the full course can be completed efficiently.
The course combines structured guidance with practical experience to create a supportive introduction to racing. Instructors are experienced in helping young sailors understand rules, sequences, and tactical thinking, providing a solid foundation for future racing opportunities.
Attention to safety, clear session structure, and small group sizes ensure each child receives the support needed to build confidence. By combining extended on-water time with targeted coaching, young sailors leave prepared to progress to club racing or Youth Race Club participation with both skill and assurance.
