Designed for confident sailors ready to advance beyond basic skills, this RYA intermediate course combines practical seamanship with an introduction to racing. On-water sessions focus on problem-solving, teamwork, and understanding how boats behave in realistic conditions. Suitable for both youth and adults, the course generally works best for older children, teenagers, and adults with prior sailing experience.
The first part of the course focuses on seamanship skills, giving sailors the chance to practise handling a boat in real situations. Exercises include reefing sails while afloat, anchoring safely, steering without a rudder, and making decisions when conditions or plans change. Communication and teamwork are emphasised, especially when sailing in crewed boats.
Racing elements are introduced later in the week through short practical exercises. Sailors learn how race courses are set, starting procedures, and how to round marks efficiently. Rules are explained through hands-on practice, giving sailors time to apply techniques and build confidence on the water.
Opting for the 5-day course allows more time to settle into the boats, repeat skills, and explore both seamanship and racing without pressure. Extra days also allow instructors to give individual guidance and adjust sessions to suit each sailor’s strengths and challenges.
Sailing takes place in Poole Harbour, a sheltered area that also offers tidal variation to introduce realistic challenges. Conditions allow instructors to adapt sessions daily, balancing safety with the opportunity to practise both seamanship and racing skills.
Facilities ashore provide space for briefings, discussions, and debriefs between sessions. Time on land is used to review skills, plan exercises, and prepare sailors for the next session on the water.
Sailors should be confident steering, controlling sails, and tacking and gybing independently, with experience equivalent to RYA Stage 2 or similar. Basic boat handling should feel natural before joining.
While adults are welcome, the course content tends to suit older children and teenagers who are ready to tackle more technical skills, teamwork, and decision-making on the water. Anyone unsure about readiness is encouraged to check before booking.
Instruction is delivered by experienced RYA-qualified coaches who know how to support sailors moving into more advanced skills. Coaching focuses on practical understanding, helping sailors gain confidence and consistency on the water.
Small groups allow plenty of personal feedback, while flexible sessions give sailors time to repeat and refine techniques. The supportive, hands-on approach helps sailors feel confident in seamanship and introduces the excitement of racing in a safe, structured setting.
