Stepping into higher-level coaching, this RYA Advanced Instructor course is designed for experienced Dinghy Instructors ready to work with confident sailors. Over two intensive days, focus moves towards advanced boat handling and coaching within the RYA Performance Sailing modules, sharpening both delivery and judgement on the water.
Initial sessions focus on the role of an Advanced Instructor and how it differs from standard dinghy instructing. Attention is given to recognising fine margins in boat handling, identifying performance gains, and adjusting coaching language for sailors who already have strong foundations. Discussions and practical tasks explore how advanced modules are structured and delivered within the RYA scheme.
Time on the water centres on coaching rather than personal sailing alone. Candidates practise observing advanced sailors, diagnosing issues quickly, and delivering clear, targeted feedback. Demonstrations are refined to highlight subtle technique changes, while safety and session control remain central throughout.
Assessment is continuous across the two days, with trainers observing coaching style, communication, and decision-making. Feedback is given regularly, allowing instructors to adjust and show progression as the course unfolds.
Training takes place in Poole Harbour, an ideal setting for advanced dinghy coaching. Sheltered areas allow precise observation and feedback, while open stretches provide space for performance-focused sailing when conditions allow.
Shore facilities nearby support briefings and debriefs, helping link on-water coaching decisions back to conditions and sailor development.
Candidates must already hold the RYA Dinghy Instructor qualification and be confident working with advanced sailors. A valid First Aid certificate, RYA Powerboat Level 2, and RYA Safe and Fun Safeguarding are required before attending.
This course is aimed at competent instructors looking to extend their coaching scope rather than newly qualified instructors.
Courses are delivered by trainers with extensive experience developing instructors at higher levels. Emphasis is placed on real coaching scenarios rather than box-ticking, helping skills translate directly into centre-based work.
Small group sizes ensure plenty of coaching time, individual feedback, and honest discussion. The atmosphere remains supportive and practical, encouraging confident progression into advanced instructing roles.
