Taking to the water on a paddleboard offers a relaxed but rewarding way to experience Brighton from a fresh angle. This guided session is designed for complete beginners and casual paddlers who want to build confidence while enjoying time on the sea. With expert instruction and a steady pace, it’s an accessible way to learn the basics and explore beyond the busy shoreline.
Your time on the water begins at Brighton Marina, where you’ll meet your instructor and get set up with a board, paddle, and buoyancy aid. Before heading out, you’ll spend time on dry land learning how to stand safely, balance effectively, and use the paddle efficiently. These first steps are taken slowly, giving you the chance to feel comfortable before launching.
Once afloat, the group starts close to shore, practising basic strokes and steering techniques in calm conditions. As confidence grows, you’ll paddle east along a quieter stretch of coastline, moving away from the busier seafront. This route allows you to enjoy open views of the chalk cliffs towards Ovingdean and Rottingdean while settling into a steady rhythm on the board.
Throughout the session, instructors remain nearby to offer tips, adjustments, and encouragement. Optional balance challenges and gentle drills are available for those keen to push themselves a little further, while others are free to enjoy a relaxed paddle at their own pace. The aim is to leave feeling more confident, capable, and comfortable on a paddleboard.
Brighton Marina provides an ideal starting point, offering sheltered water for learning alongside easy access to the open sea. This combination makes it well suited to first-time paddleboarders.
Paddling east from the marina leads to a calmer section of coast, with fewer distractions and more space to focus on technique while enjoying wide coastal views.
No previous paddleboarding experience is needed, making this session suitable for anyone looking to try something new. A basic level of fitness is recommended, as standing and paddling for extended periods can be tiring.
You should be able to swim at least 50 metres and feel comfortable being on the water. Sea conditions are monitored carefully, and if conditions are unsuitable, the session may take place in sheltered marina waters.
Decades of delivering outdoor activities across the South East have shaped a teaching style that balances safety, enjoyment, and clear progression. Sessions are structured to allow plenty of time for learning without pressure, helping you build confidence naturally on the water.
A strong focus on instructor experience and small group sizes ensures you receive personal guidance throughout. Many people return after their first session to continue developing their skills, drawn back by the supportive atmosphere and consistent standards.
Yes, this session is designed with beginners in mind and starts from the very basics. Time is taken to explain equipment, balance, and paddling techniques before heading out.
Instructors stay close throughout, offering reassurance and advice so you can progress at a comfortable pace.
Standing is encouraged once you feel ready, but you’re free to kneel or sit if you need a break. Many people start kneeling and stand up gradually as confidence builds.
There’s no pressure to stay upright, and the session is adapted to suit different comfort levels.
Falling in is part of learning and happens occasionally, especially for beginners. Instructors explain how to get back onto the board safely and calmly.
Optional falling-in drills can be practised in a controlled way, helping you feel more confident if it happens unexpectedly.
You don’t need to be highly athletic, but paddleboarding does involve using your core and legs to balance. A reasonable level of fitness will help you enjoy the session more.
Regular pauses and a relaxed pace ensure it remains accessible rather than exhausting.
Clothing that can get wet is essential, along with layers suitable for the conditions. Waterproofs are strongly recommended even on warmer days.
Footwear such as old trainers or plimsolls must be worn. Denim and sandals are not suitable.
Yes, boards, paddles, and buoyancy aids are all included. Equipment is selected to suit beginners and provide good stability on the water.
You’ll receive a full kit list after booking so you know what personal items to bring.
When conditions allow, the group paddles along the open coastline to the east of Brighton. This offers more space and a quieter environment.
If the sea is rough, the session may remain within the sheltered waters of the marina.
