Spend a full day learning the essentials of outdoor rock climbing at Harrison’s Rocks. Under expert instruction, you’ll develop the skills needed to climb safely, belay your partner, and tackle beginner-friendly routes at your own pace. The course combines practical techniques with insights into the sport’s history, giving you a complete introduction to climbing.
Your day begins with an introduction to climbing equipment and safety, including harness fitting, helmet adjustment, and rope handling. You’ll learn essential knots and how to tie in securely, followed by instruction on how to belay your partner safely.
Once comfortable with the basics, you’ll move to beginner routes hand-picked to suit your skill level. Your instructor will guide you through climbing techniques, body positioning, and route planning while gradually increasing the difficulty to build confidence. Throughout the day, there will be breaks for hydration and snacks, giving time to reflect on progress and enjoy the outdoor setting.
In the afternoon, you’ll consolidate your learning on slightly more challenging climbs. The instructor will give one-to-one guidance, helping you refine movement and technique. By the end of the session, you will have climbed multiple routes and developed the core skills to continue climbing independently or progress to more advanced outdoor sessions.
The climbing takes place at Harrison’s Rocks, situated on the Sussex and Kent border, surrounded by woodland and natural rock formations. The area offers easy access from London and Brighton, with parking nearby and clear paths to the climbing zones.
The site features high-quality outdoor climbing walls suited to beginners and intermediate climbers, with a variety of routes to accommodate different skill levels. Instructors provide a safe environment while making the most of the natural setting, ensuring participants can focus on learning and enjoying the experience.
No previous climbing experience is required, but a reasonable level of fitness will help you get the most from the day. Participants should be comfortable walking on uneven ground and able to manage short climbs safely.
Clothing should be suitable for the outdoors, including warm layers and waterproofs, as well as trainers or flexible footwear. All climbing equipment such as ropes, harness, helmet, belay device, and karabiners will be provided.
The team has over 15 years of experience delivering outdoor adventure courses, with highly qualified instructors who are passionate about teaching. Their approach combines safety with enjoyment, ensuring each participant gains confidence and new skills throughout the session.
Alongside practical instruction, they bring professional expertise from providing safety cover for television and film productions, giving participants reassurance in the quality of supervision. Their instructors are approachable and supportive, making it easy for first-time climbers to enjoy a full day of learning and outdoor activity.
