Radar is an essential tool for modern navigation, but only works effectively when you understand its limitations, functions, and interpretation. This one-day course provides a practical and theoretical understanding of radar, helping sailors of both motor and sailing vessels use this technology to enhance navigation and avoid collisions.
The course begins with an introduction to radar wave propagation and the fundamental components of a radar set. Participants gain an understanding of how radar waves interact with objects and the limitations of radar in different conditions. The instructor will explain how targets are defined and discriminated, helping sailors avoid misinterpretation that could compromise safety.
Participants will learn about different types of radar displays and radar reflectors, then move on to practical plotting exercises. This includes understanding range and bearing, target movement, and integrating radar information with charts to make informed navigation decisions. Real-world examples and scenarios illustrate how radar assists in collision avoidance and safe navigation.
Whether classroom-based or afloat, the course balances theory with hands-on exercises. Students will practice using radar for navigation and collision avoidance, with detailed guidance from experienced instructors. By the end of the day, participants will be confident in understanding radar limitations, interpreting images correctly, and applying radar data effectively during voyages.
The course takes place at our RYA-accredited training centre in Menai Bridge, Isle of Anglesey, offering modern classrooms and immediate access to local waters for afloat exercises. The Menai Strait provides a varied environment for applying radar skills in real-world scenarios.
Menai Bridge is ideally situated with sheltered tidal waters and visibility conditions that allow practical demonstrations of radar in different settings. Instructors use the local area to illustrate how radar can enhance collision avoidance and navigation in both coastal and offshore situations.
No prior navigation experience is required for this course, making it suitable for beginners and experienced sailors alike.
Participants should be comfortable following technical instruction and applying practical exercises in a classroom or afloat setting. Enthusiasm for learning radar technology and integrating it into safe navigation is essential.
We are an RYA-accredited training centre with highly experienced instructors who combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills gained in local waters. Our team ensures that each participant gains a clear understanding of radar and its applications.
The course is delivered in small groups, allowing personalised attention and tailored guidance. By teaching using RYA-approved guidelines, practical experience, and local knowledge of the Menai Strait, we ensure participants leave with the confidence to use radar safely and effectively.

Fantastic experience led by friendly, efficient and interesting people.
The instructor/guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable, and we had great fun on the boat
We loved our boat trip, water doughnuts and speeding along 50mph + was great fun. Our skipper was lovely, very knowledgeable and enthusiasm shone through. Want to come back and see the puffins next year... although this was my soul reason to book this trip it really did not disappoint…
The Rib Tour was amazing! Exhilarating ride on the rib combined with fascinating facts about the coastline and the birds on puffin island. Highly recommended, will be booking the bridges tour next.
Exhilarating but also really informative. A great experience all round and highly recommended
Brilliant! Loved when Jason put the RIB into ‘sports mode’. Perfect mix of adventure and information. Beautiful scenery, great morning in the water. Cheers guys.
What a great experience. Our skipper, Jason, was great. Good chat, very knowledgable and really pushed the boat. The boat is an impressive thing which really moves. Great experience! Will be back to do the other tour.
Excellent!
Splendid trip!.....Captain was very knowledgeable.
We really enjoyed the boat trip to Puffin Island (2 August) - the people before us saw 2 puffins but even though we didn't it was still an exhilarating, (fast at times) and informative trip.
