The boattrip was amazing! We enjoyed every minute! Jason our captain told us a lot from the wildlife on Puffin Island. We really recommend this trip, it’s worth the money for sure.
Fantastic experience led by friendly, efficient and interesting people.
The instructor/guide was fantastic and very knowledgeable, and we had great fun on the boat
We loved our boat trip, water doughnuts and speeding along 50mph + was great fun. Our skipper was lovely, very knowledgeable and enthusiasm shone through. Want to come back and see the puffins next year... although this was my soul reason to book this trip it really did not disappoint…
The Rib Tour was amazing! Exhilarating ride on the rib combined with fascinating facts about the coastline and the birds on puffin island. Highly recommended, will be booking the bridges tour next.
Exhilarating but also really informative. A great experience all round and highly recommended
Brilliant! Loved when Jason put the RIB into ‘sports mode’. Perfect mix of adventure and information. Beautiful scenery, great morning in the water. Cheers guys.
What a great experience. Our skipper, Jason, was great. Good chat, very knowledgable and really pushed the boat. The boat is an impressive thing which really moves. Great experience! Will be back to do the other tour.
Excellent!

The aim of the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Theory course, also known as RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory, is to take your navigation and meteorology knowledge to the standard required for the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore practical exams. It is a comprehensive shore-based course covering everything from position fixing to interpreting weather forecasts, giving you the confidence to plan and navigate extended coastal and offshore passages.
Shore-based learning covers position fixing, using a range of techniques to establish an accurate position at sea, and course shaping and plotting, planning and plotting a course while taking into account tide, leeway and other factors. Tidal knowledge covers tidal streams, tidal heights and their effect on passage planning. You also use almanacs and Admiralty publications for planning and navigation, and electronic position finding equipment as part of modern navigation.
Meteorology takes you through taking and interpreting weather forecasts, plotting weather systems and making weather predictions using a barometer. This course is a prerequisite for anyone wishing to go on to complete an RYA Yachtmaster qualification, and is suitable for those looking to build the theory knowledge needed to skipper confidently on longer, more challenging passages by sail or power.
Classroom days are held at our training centre in Menai Bridge on the Isle of Anglesey, with a fully equipped classroom in the town itself. Online and distance learning use the same shore-based syllabus, so you can take the course in the way that suits you.
They say if you can navigate the Menai Strait then it sets you in good stead for any navigational boating challenge. The classroom is easily reached by taking junction 8A onto the A5 off the A55 at Britannia Bridge, with Pay and Display parking across the road.
Participants should have knowledge to the level of the RYA Day Skipper Theory course. There is no minimum age requirement on the RYA syllabus. This listing is for anyone who already has that Day Skipper Theory base and wants the Coastal and Offshore exam standard.
You do not need offshore miles before the theory week. You do need to be ready for longer chartwork sessions, tidal calculations and weather plots. If your Day Skipper Theory is rusty, revise the basics before you start so the course can stay at Yachtmaster pace.
What makes a Seawake Powerboat Training course different is our team. We are all enthusiastic powerboaters with a vast amount of experience on the water, and this shore-based course is taught by instructors who already run the powerboat tickets on the same water.
Our instructors teach using RYA guidelines, their own experience and their local knowledge of the Menai Strait and North Wales coast. Theory is important, and the classroom sits in Menai Bridge so the tidal examples on the chart are the same streams you will meet when you go afloat.
Classroom days are at 40 High Street, Menai Bridge, Isle of Anglesey, LL59 5EF. Take junction 8A onto the A5 off the A55 at Britannia Bridge. Pay and Display parking is across the road from the classroom.

Participants should have knowledge to the level of the RYA Day Skipper Theory course. That is the base the Yachtmaster paper builds on, so chartwork, tides and collision regulations should already feel familiar.
There is no minimum age requirement on the RYA syllabus. If your Day Skipper Theory is a few years old, revise the basics before you start so the week can stay at this standard.
This is a shore-based course that can be taken in the classroom, online or by distance learning. The syllabus is the same on each route, including position fixing, course shaping, tides, publications, electronic navigation and meteorology.
Classroom days are at 40 High Street, Menai Bridge. Online and distance learning let you work through the same exercises away from the classroom.

Passing does not replace the practical exam. It is the shore-based standard the Coastal and Offshore examiners expect you to have before you take a boat on those passages.

No. The course is suitable for those looking to build the theory knowledge needed to skipper confidently on longer, more challenging passages by sail or power. The chartwork, tides and meteorology are the same whether the boat has a keel or an outboard.
Seawake is a powerboat school, so the classroom examples often sit on the North Wales coast and the Strait, but the RYA paper is the Yachtmaster Offshore Theory syllabus for both.
Yes. The shore-based course ends with the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Theory exam, which checks the position fixing, course shaping, tides, publications and meteorology you have been working through.
Passing confirms you have the theory required for the Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore practical exams. It does not itself qualify you as a Yachtmaster.
A notebook and pen are enough. Course materials, charts and publications are provided. Wear comfortable clothing for a full day at the chart table.
Bring lunch or money to buy it locally. The classroom is in Menai Bridge town, with shops a short walk from 40 High Street.
Day Skipper Theory is the comprehensive introduction to chartwork, navigation, meteorology and seamanship. Yachtmaster Offshore Theory takes that knowledge to the standard required for the Coastal and Offshore practical exams.
If you do not yet have knowledge to Day Skipper Theory level, start there. This course assumes that base so it can spend the hours on course shaping, publications and weather at Yachtmaster pace.
