A private lesson gives you your own instructor, a plan built around what you want to work on, and no group of strangers in the water. Whether you're nervous, chasing a particular skill, or just want space away from the crowds, we'll shape the 2.5 hours around you. Individuals, couples and small groups from 5 years old are welcome, from first-timers through to intermediate surfers.
Your lesson starts the moment you arrive. We'll check in with you, calm any nerves, understand what you want from the session and get you in the right mindset, then kit you out in a wetsuit, pair you with the right board and walk you to the beach. On the sand we cover safety, ocean awareness, an exercise-science based warm-up and the techniques that match your experience.
In the water you'll put that beach work into practice with plenty of one-to-one coaching. Expect detailed feedback, plenty of encouragement and a fair bit of laughter, plus a local discount on coffees, hot chocolates, pastries and ice cream on the day. Because the instructor is yours, the pace stays with you rather than a mixed group.
Lessons take place at Watergate Bay, known for its wide, soft sandy shoreline and consistent waves. It's a local favourite and a brilliant spot for beginners and more experienced surfers alike.
It's an easy short drive from Newquay town centre, with parking, toilets, cafes and restaurants nearby so you can make a proper day of it away from the busier town beaches.
Private lessons are open to all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced surfers. No prior experience is needed, though a basic level of fitness will help you make the most of the session.
One child under 8 can join without a helper in the water, though that means the instructor has less hands-on time for everyone else. Extra children under 8 need a non-surfing adult with them.
Adam and Gemma run this as a couple-owned surf school, and they set out to build a session around empathy, professionalism, knowledge and fun. Having come to surfing later themselves, they know how hard the first steps can feel, and they hand-pick instructors who keep the water supportive.
Their goal is to make this the highlight of your trip to Cornwall. Super-small groups, longer one-to-one time, well-kept kit and exclusive local discounts are all part of that.
You'll meet us at Watergate Bay, about a minute from our HQ in Newquay Bay Resort and around 10 minutes from Newquay town centre. That's where we kit you out and walk you down to the sand.
If conditions mean we need to move the lesson, we'll give you plenty of notice so you can get there without a rush and still have time to change.
Please arrive 30 minutes before your lesson so we have time to check you in and get you into a wetsuit. That buffer also gives us a chance to talk through what you want to work on before you walk to the beach.
On weekends, school holidays and sunny days, give yourself extra time for traffic and parking around the bay. The closest car parks fill quickly when the weather is good.
We sit on The Green, opposite Wax Beach Bar and next to the council car park. Just Park Wallet can sometimes save you a little on the council spaces if you book ahead.
There's more parking opposite Watergate Bay Hotel and on the southern cliff overlooking the bay if the closest car park is full. Allow a short walk down to the beach from those overflow spots.
Arrive in swimwear with slip-on shoes so changing into a wetsuit is quick. We provide the wetsuit and board, and boots in the cooler months, so you do not need to bring your own kit unless you prefer to.
Bring sun cream, water, a towel and a change of clothes for afterwards. If you want a shower after the session, bring some change for the machines on the beach.
We can look after your car keys while you surf, which is usually the simplest way to keep the vehicle locked. There is not a locker room for bags or valuables at the beach base.
Leave other belongings locked in your vehicle before you come down to the sand. Wet kit and a towel are easier to manage if you keep the rest of your day bag in the car.
We surf in the rain. A wet day often means better waves, and you'll be in a wetsuit anyway, so a shower rarely spoils the session.
We only cancel if the beach is red-flagged or we decide conditions aren't safe. If that happens, we'll reschedule you or refund the lesson so you are not left without a plan.
You're welcome to wear your own wetsuit, though we may still suggest one of ours depending on how thick it is and how cold the water feels. Our suits are chosen for the lesson and the time of year.
If you'd like to use your own surfboard, message us on Adventuro chat before the day so we can check it suits the session. We can match the board to the skills you want to work on that day.
Private lessons are open to individuals, couples and small groups from complete beginners through to intermediate surfers. You have your own instructor, so the plan is built around what you want to work on rather than a standard group class.
Children from 5 are welcome. Only one child under 8 can join without a helper in the water, and extra children that young need a non-surfing adult with them.
Your booking covers around 2.5 hours including getting ready, your own instructor, a wetsuit, a surfboard and changing facilities. In the cooler months we also include wetsuit boots.
The lesson is private to your group, so you are not sharing the instructor with strangers. Towels, swimwear, food, parking and transport are not included.
Yes. Children from 5 can join, and only one child aged 5 to 7 can take part without a helper in the water. Extra children that young need a non-surfing adult with them.
Having more young children in the water splits the instructor's hands-on time. Tell us about ages when you book so we can plan the session and keep everyone progressing.
We partner with Rewilding Britain to help protect our natural spaces for future adventures.
