Prepare for emergencies when help is distant on accredited outdoor first aid training delivered over one or two days near Skipton. The eight-hour day maps to Institute for Outdoor Learning Band 2 expectations; the sixteen-hour course meets many outdoor NGB Band 3 requirements.
This course delivers practical, scenario-based first aid training tailored specifically for remote environments where emergency services may be hours away. Your tutor coaches you through primary assessments, managing unconscious casualties on rough ground, CPR, hypothermia, fractures, dislocations, and improvising splints using outdoor kit.
Training alternates between focused indoor theory and outdoor casualty simulations in varied weather conditions, allowing you to test communication, triage, and evacuation plans for real. You will work in small teams to manage complex emergency scenarios, developing the calm decision-making needed by outdoor leaders.
The course combines classroom facilities in the Skipton / Dales area with nearby rough terrain, woodland, and open moorland for realistic outdoor casualty simulations. Having direct access to outdoor ground allows us to recreate genuine hill and crag rescue scenarios.
Exact venue location, parking information, and arrival details are confirmed before your course. You will need full outdoor waterproofs, warm layers, and sturdy boots since practical casualty exercises take place outside regardless of the weather.
Minimum age 16; no previous first aid experience is required, making it suitable for both first-timers and renewing outdoor instructors. You should be physically able to kneel, roll casualties, and take part in outdoor ground scenarios.
Please let us know about any physical limitations, joint concerns, or medical conditions beforehand so we can support your participation. Come prepared to spend time outdoors in all weather conditions.
We train outdoor leaders with scenario-led first aid that reflects real moorland and crag incidents, not classroom theory alone.
Our 16-hour course aligns with Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL) Band 3 standards and satisfies the first aid prerequisites for Mountain Training, British Canoeing, and RYA qualifications.
Training starts at 17 Heber Drive, East Marton, Skipton BD23 3HA for briefings, with outdoor casualty scenarios on nearby moorland and woodland.
We send room access, parking and arrival time before day one; bring outdoor kit for outside practice each day.
Outdoor instructors, Duke of Edinburgh leaders, climbing coaches and anyone who works in remote moorland or crag settings where ambulance access may be slow. The syllabus emphasises improvisation, evacuation thinking and team communication.
Learners must be at least 16 on the course date. Tell us about joint or back issues when you book so we can adapt kneeling and casualty-handling exercises safely.
Your course fee covers qualified tuition, training manikins, splinting materials, scenario props and certification when you pass the practical outcomes for the duration you booked.
Travel to Skipton, meals, personal outdoor clothing and any NGB registration fees beyond first aid are not included. You should arrive dressed for outdoor scenarios on both days of the full course.
Day briefings start at our Heber Drive base near Skipton, then move to nearby woodland and moorland for realistic casualty simulations when conditions allow. Indoor space is available for theory and sheltered practice.
We email parking, arrival time and what to bring before day one. Expect to be outside for substantial parts of each day even in cooler weather.
Wear full outdoor waterproofs, warm layers and sturdy boots you can kneel in on rough ground. Gloves and a hat help during winter scenarios when you may be static while managing a casualty.
Pack lunch, snacks and plenty of water for each training day. A small rucksack lets you carry kit between indoor and outdoor exercise areas like you would on the hill.
No previous qualification is required for the full two-day outdoor first aid course. Tutors teach primary survey, CPR and injury management from first principles before adding remote-environment complications.
The one-day emergency option covers the first day of the syllabus only. Book two days if your governing body or Mountain Training logbook requires sixteen hours and IOL Band 3 coverage.
Assessment is continuous through indoor drills, outdoor scenarios and tutor observation. You will work in small teams to manage multi-casualty exercises that test communication as well as technical skills.
Feedback is given throughout so you understand both what to do and how to prioritise when help is far away. There is no separate high-stakes written paper at the end of the course.
The Level 3 Outdoor First Aid award is valid for three years from the date of issue. Many outdoor NGBs expect you to renew before expiry to keep instructor or coach status current.
We can advise on refresher timing and whether the one-day or two-day route suits your renewal. Keep your certificate accessible for course director checks on Mountain Training schemes.
Outdoor scenarios deliberately use realistic wind, rain and cold when it is safe to do so, because that is when leaders need clear protocols. We shorten or relocate exercises if lightning, ice or storm-force wind makes ground work unsafe.
Indoor space and sheltered woodland edges are used when needed so learning continues without unnecessary risk. Your tutor explains any changes at the morning briefing.
Manikins, bandages, splinting materials, scenario props and group first aid kits are provided for all taught elements. Tutors may ask you to improvise with your own rucksack straps or poles during evacuation drills.
Bring your own outdoor clothing, food and optional notebooks. Personal medications should be carried as you would on a normal working day in the hills.
Yes. The emergency one-day course delivers the first eight hours of the outdoor syllabus and suits some renewal or Band 2 expectations. Confirm with your employer or NGB that one day meets your needs before you book.
The two-day course completes the sixteen-hour programme many climbing, paddling and walking qualifications require. You can upgrade to day two on a later date within the window stated on your confirmation email.
