What is the IOL?
The Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL) is the UK professional body for outdoor educators, facilitators and adventure practitioners. It promotes good practice, CPD and ethical outdoor learning rather than replacing National Governing Body qualifications for specific activities.
IOL runs accreditation schemes for training courses and awards such as the Bushcraft Competency Certificate, and supports members with resources, conferences and sector advocacy. Employers often value IOL membership as a mark of professional commitment alongside NGB leadership cards.

Choosing a course
IOL membership complements but does not replace activity-specific NGB qualifications. Book Mountain Training or specialist awards for the activity you lead; consider IOL CPD separately for facilitation and education skills. Leave a comment when you book if you are building a portfolio for outdoor centre employment.
Check whether a course is IOL-accredited if your employer requests it. Many adventuro listings are NGB awards delivered by IOL member centres without a separate IOL certificate.
Official standards
Professional standards, membership and accreditation information are published by the Institute for Outdoor Learning at outdoor-learning.org. This overview is a guide for booking on adventuro. Your training provider confirms which qualifications and IOL pathways apply when you book.
