Move onto the sharp end of the rope on a intensive two-day learn to lead trad course for young climbers aged 14 and over. Coaching covers Yorkshire grit ethics, gear placement, decision making and confident leading with instructors who know local outcrops.
Step onto the sharp end of the rope on a dedicated two-day trad leading course designed specifically for confident young climbers aged 14 and over. Your instructor coaches you through rack organisation, placing protection on lead, assessing gear placements on the move, and constructing multi-piece equalised belays.
You will begin by mock-leading on a top-rope with immediate placement critique, progressing to your first coached independent leads when your instructor verifies you are ready. The curriculum emphasises risk assessment, psychological composure, and the ethical traditions of British gritstone climbing.
Training takes place on classic Yorkshire gritstone outcrops like Almscliffe, Brimham, or the Cow and Calf, renowned for their secure gear placements and varied crack systems. Instructors select well-protected, low-grade routes that provide ideal learning platforms for novice leaders.
We confirm the exact crag, parking details, and daily schedule before the weekend so you can arrive prepared and focused. You will need your own climbing shoes and harness, with all communal trad gear and ropes provided.
Minimum age 14; participants must be competent seconding trad routes or have extensive indoor top-rope and lead experience (minimum F5 / VDiff standard). Reliable belaying skills and experience catching leader falls are mandatory.
A high level of focus, maturity, and physical stamina for two full days on the crag is essential. Please disclose any medical conditions or relevant injuries during registration.
The team grew out of school and youth climbing programmes across Yorkshire, so instructors know how to keep developing climbers safe while still having fun on real rock. We specialise in mentoring young climbers through critical developmental milestones.
Delivered by experienced Mountain Training instructors with comprehensive youth safeguarding and outdoor first aid qualifications. Our low ratios provide constant, close-proximity oversight while giving young leaders the space to build real self-trust.
Meet at Almscliffe Crag car park, Almscliffe Crag, North Yorkshire LS21 2QJ. Allow extra time for moorland or crag approaches from the car park.
We send final directions, parking details and arrival time before your session.
Teen climbers aged 14 to 17 who second trad confidently and want coached lead practice on appropriate Yorkshire grit with strict ratios and parental consent in place.
Completion of Kids Rock Skills Intermediate or equivalent outdoor mileage is expected before booking this weekend.
Two days of trad lead coaching, shared teaching racks and ropes, and clear progressions from placement refreshers through to supervised leads on easy grades.
Personal harness, helmet, shoes and any rack pieces you own should be brought; food and transport are not included.
Venues are chosen for youth-appropriate routes and straightforward access. Guardians receive parking, grid reference and safeguarding notes before the course.
Young people should not leave the venue with anyone other than the named collector agreed on the consent form.
Full personal climbing kit, lunch and water for both days, plus waterproofs and spare warm layers for belay sessions that can feel chilly.
A small notebook for anchor sketches can help them remember rack order when they practise at the wall between courses.
Solid seconding, belay calls and rack familiarity from intermediate youth courses or regular club trips. Coaches verify competence before anyone ties in to lead.
Indoor-only lead experience is not enough on its own; outdoor trad seconding mileage matters for this course.
Reserve a place on Adventuro and submit parental consent, emergency contacts and any medical information we need for safe coaching.
Small group sizes mean weekends can sell out; book early for Easter and summer dates.
Coaches choose dry, sheltered sectors where possible and shorten days if lightning or storm-force wind threatens the crag.
Guardians are called if we cancel before arrival so you do not make a wasted journey.
Teens who show reliable placements and communication usually lead a short pitch under direct supervision. Grades stay modest to build safe habits for future club climbing.
There is no requirement to lead if head game needs more mock-lead reps; coaches pace progression individually within the group.
Qualified youth instructors run low ratios, check harnesses and knots every pitch, and use backup ropes where appropriate for early leads.
We follow safeguarding policies; any concerns can be raised with the lead instructor or centre office on the day.
UK cancellation tiers apply as listed on this page. Please notify us promptly if your teen cannot attend so we can offer the place to another family.
Transfers to another youth trad weekend are considered when we have space and notice is reasonable.
