Take indoor lead climbing outdoors on bolted Yorkshire limestone with two days of clipping practice, movement coaching and crag safety. Ideal if trad climbing is not your goal but you want accessible sport routes locally and abroad.
Transition your indoor lead climbing skills to outdoor bolted crags during this two-day intensive sport climbing course. Your instructor guides you through clipping efficiency from stances, reading limestone features, outdoor rope management, and executing safe threading procedures at lower-off anchors.
Practical coaching sessions include safe, controlled falling practice and active belaying techniques to boost your confidence on lead. You will also learn how to use a clip-stick safely, clean steep routes, and assess bolt hardware for peace of mind at the crag.
Sessions run on Yorkshire premier bolted limestone crags, such as Giggleswick South, Castleberg Quarry, or Robin Proctor Scar, which offer a high density of well-bolted sport routes across all grades. Instructors select venues with stable belay areas and sheltered rock faces.
We confirm the exact venue meeting point, parking information, and daily timings before the course. Approaches usually follow short footpath walks, so bring supportive walking shoes alongside your climbing equipment and outdoor layers.
Confident indoor lead climbing at around F5/F6a and solid lead belay skills. Under-18s need a paying adult on the course. No prior outdoor experience is required.
Good general fitness and flexibility are needed for two full days of climbing outdoors. Please let us know about any injuries or medical conditions during registration.
Limestone sport coaching is led by instructors who climb these crags regularly, so venue choice and route selection match the forecast and your grade. You leave with habits that transfer to bolted cliffs abroad as well as Yorkshire.
All courses are coached by Mountain Training qualified instructors with up-to-date outdoor first aid certification. Small group sizes mean you get abundant lead mileage on the crag with tailored coaching on technique, movement, and mental approach.
Meet at Malham area, Malham, Skipton BD23 4DJ. Allow extra time for moorland or crag approaches from the car park.
We send final directions, parking details and arrival time before your session.
Climbers who can already lead indoors or have strong seconding experience outdoors and want a coached weekend on bolted Yorkshire routes. Minimum age 14 applies unless we agree otherwise in writing.
You should be comfortable placing quickdraws, clipping and falling on bolts in a wall environment before we move those skills onto real rock.
Two days of qualified coaching, shared ropes and teaching racks, and structured progressions from mock leads through to supervised leads on appropriate grades.
Personal shoes, harness, helmet, quickdraws if you own them, food and travel are not included in the course fee.
We use bolted venues in Yorkshire such as Kilnsey, Foredale or similar depending on conditions. Meet point and parking details land in your confirmation email the week before the course.
Approaches vary from short walks to steady hill paths, so arrive with a full daypack ready for both days.
Your own harness, helmet, climbing shoes and at least a dozen quickdraws if you have them. Pack lunch, water, waterproofs and a spare warm layer for belay stances.
A fall-arrest device you are used to belaying with helps keep transitions smooth when you swap leader and belayer roles.
Rock Skills Intermediate or equivalent outdoor mileage is expected, plus recent lead or top-rope belay practice. Coaches assess clipping and belay technique on day one before anyone leads on rock.
If your experience is mostly indoor, tell us your on-sight grade so we can advise whether this weekend is the right next step.
Book your place through Adventuro and we confirm payment, ratios and any parental consent for under-18 participants.
Weekend courses fill quickly in spring and autumn, so securing your date early is worthwhile.
Light rain on limestone can still allow climbing on sheltered sectors; high wind or electrical storms mean we pause or relocate. Your coach explains decisions on the morning briefing.
If we cancel the weekend for safety before day one, reschedule or refund follows the policy on this page.
Most learners lead at least one pitch under coach supervision once mock leads and clipping drills look solid. The exact grade depends on your movement, head game and conditions on the day.
There is no pressure to lead if you prefer more mock-lead reps; the aim is safe, repeatable habits rather than ticking a number.
Content maps to sport-lead development within the Rock Skills pathway and can be logged with Mountain Training if you are registered.
Coaches sign off skills in your DLOG when appropriate; bring your candidate number if you already have an account.
Cancellation fees follow the UK course tiers published on this page. Weekend places are limited, so please give as much notice as possible if you cannot attend.
Contact us about transferring to another date when injury or work clashes arise; we will help where instructor capacity allows.
