Combining challenging mountain trekking with authentic cultural experiences, this High Atlas adventure takes you to the summit of Mount M'Goun, Morocco's second-highest peak. Beginning in the Ait Bouguemez Valley, often known as the Happy Valley, the route passes through remote villages, dramatic gorges, high plateaus and fossil-covered mountain ridges before reaching the summit at 4,068 metres.
Designed for experienced hikers with a high level of fitness, the trek follows a circular route that showcases the incredible diversity of the High Atlas Mountains. Along the way, you'll camp beneath the stars, stay in a traditional mountain lodge and travel with an experienced local team who manage the logistics, meals and mule support throughout the expedition.
Providing far more than a summit challenge, this itinerary has been carefully designed to introduce you to one of Morocco's quieter mountain regions. Compared with the more popular Toubkal area, Mount M'Goun offers a greater sense of remoteness, allowing you to experience peaceful valleys, traditional Amazigh communities and mountain landscapes that remain largely untouched by mass tourism.
Every departure is supported by CFAMM-certified mountain guides, experienced muleteers and cooks who know the region exceptionally well. Their knowledge of the terrain, local culture and mountain conditions allows you to enjoy a rewarding trekking experience while travelling safely through some of Morocco's most spectacular scenery.
Leaving Marrakech in the morning, you'll travel through Azilal before continuing into the beautiful Ait Bouguemez Valley. After arriving in Agouti, you'll meet the mule team, load the equipment and begin the first stage of the trek towards Ikkis n'Arous.
The opening walk lasts around three hours, providing a gentle introduction to the High Atlas while passing traditional villages, cultivated terraces and peaceful mountain scenery before reaching the first campsite.
Today's route climbs steadily towards the Tizi n'Tarkedite Pass at approximately 3,450 metres. From here you'll enjoy your first clear views of Mount M'Goun rising above the surrounding peaks before descending onto the wide Tarkedite Plateau.
After around six hours of walking, camp is set on the plateau, surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes and open alpine scenery.
An early start allows you to reach the summit of Mount M'Goun while enjoying the cooler morning temperatures. The climb passes remarkable limestone formations containing visible marine fossils, a reminder that these mountains were once beneath the sea millions of years ago.
Following time at the summit to appreciate the panoramic views across the High Atlas, you'll descend towards Oulilimt, where camp is established close to the mountain spring after approximately seven hours of trekking.
After the challenge of summit day, today's route is shorter and more relaxed. Following the river through the impressive Oulilimt Gorges, you'll enjoy changing scenery while descending towards the peaceful campsite near the Aflafal spring.
The gentler pace allows more time to appreciate the surrounding mountains, rest tired legs and enjoy another evening beneath the stars.
Following the river once again, the trail gradually climbs towards the Tizi n'Ait Imi Pass. From the top, wide views open across both the Ait Bouguemez Valley and the M'Goun Valley, with Mount Ouaouglzate dominating the surrounding skyline.
After taking time to enjoy the scenery, the route descends into the valley where the final night is spent in a traditional mountain gîte, providing a comfortable finish to the trekking section.
Accommodation combines traditional mountain hospitality with well-supported camping. Most evenings are spent in spacious two-person tents set up by the support team, allowing you to enjoy peaceful campsites in spectacular mountain surroundings.
The final night is spent in a traditional mountain gîte within the Ait Bouguemez Valley, providing a comfortable place to relax before returning to Marrakech. Foam mattresses and all essential camping equipment are included throughout the trek.
Mount M'Goun is often considered a more demanding trekking experience because the expedition covers greater distances across remote mountain terrain rather than focusing mainly on the summit. Consecutive long walking days, varied landscapes and multiple high mountain passes require strong endurance and previous trekking experience.
Although Mount Toubkal is slightly higher, many experienced hikers consider the M'Goun trek to offer a greater wilderness experience, with fewer visitors and a much more varied journey through the High Atlas Mountains.
This trek is designed for experienced walkers with a high level of fitness who are comfortable hiking for several consecutive days across mountainous terrain. Daily walks range from approximately three to seven hours, often including significant climbs and descents at high altitude.
Preparing with regular hill walking, endurance training and longer hikes before travelling will greatly improve your comfort throughout the expedition and help you enjoy the journey more fully.
Unlike Morocco's busiest trekking areas, the M'Goun Massif remains relatively peaceful, allowing visitors to experience remote valleys, traditional Amazigh villages and mountain scenery without large numbers of other hikers.
The route also passes through a wider variety of landscapes than many summit-only treks, including river gorges, alpine plateaus, fossil-covered ridges and fertile farming valleys that continue to support local mountain communities.
Yes. Throughout the expedition, mules transport the main luggage, camping equipment and food supplies between camps, allowing you to walk with only a lightweight daypack containing your daily essentials.
This traditional system has been used in the High Atlas for generations and makes longer trekking routes significantly more enjoyable by reducing the amount of weight carried each day.
Most nights are spent in comfortable two-person tents that are prepared by the support team before your arrival. Foam mattresses are provided, while the cook prepares freshly made meals each evening after the day's walk.
Although facilities remain basic because of the remote mountain setting, camping is one of the highlights of the journey, allowing you to experience peaceful evenings surrounded by the High Atlas landscape.
The summit climb does not normally require technical climbing skills, but it is physically demanding due to the altitude, length of the ascent and rocky mountain terrain. Good balance, stamina and previous hiking experience are strongly recommended.
Your guide will set a steady pace throughout the climb, ensuring regular breaks while monitoring weather conditions and the group's progress during the ascent.
One of the highlights of the trek is travelling through remote Amazigh communities where traditional ways of life continue much as they have for generations. You'll pass villages built from local stone, terraced farmland and mountain pastures while learning about local customs from your guide.
These encounters provide a deeper understanding of the High Atlas beyond the mountains themselves, adding a cultural element that complements the physical challenge of the trek.
